Worst Steelers Post-Season Loss Ever?
I thought The 1994 AFC Title Game loss at home to The Chargers was the tops, with The 2001 AFC Title loss at home to The Pats coming in a close 2nd. However, after Sunday's debacle in Denver, for a myriad of reasons already disscussed on this site, I think we have a new "winner" in this esteemed category Agree/Disagree? Discuss....

When you lose to an 8-8 team with the worst quarterback in the league, it is without a doubt top of the list

Re: Worst Steelers Post-Season Loss Ever?
Outside of the 2 super bowl losses, the '02 AFCC loss to New England is the worst, the AFCC loss to SD is a very close second. Both were at home, and we were double digit favorites in both. We led the Chargers by 10 at the half and dominated the entire game until that SOB pupunu got loose. We lost the NE game because of a blocked fg for a TD and punt return (made possible by troy edwards running out of bounds on the previous play).
Sunday was awful, but the SB wasn't on the line, and we weren't going to beat whoever the NFC sends to Indianapolis... if we would have been lucky enough to beat NE and Balt.

With the players we lost during the game in Denver, we might have had more starters out than playing. We were dealt an excruciatingly bad hand with the injuries, and with the loss of the defensive linemen, I think Brady would have lit us up for over 40 points had we advanced instead of Denver.Steelers76 wrote:I thought The 1994 AFC Title Game loss at home to The Chargers was the tops, with The 2001 AFC Title loss at home to The Pats coming in a close 2nd. This loss would have been EXTREMELY painful had we been relatively healthy, and were in similar shape to how this team was three years ago.
Whenever Tom Brady loses, it's always someone else's fault.

Re: Worst Steelers Post-Season Loss Ever?
The Bronco debacle for me is a close 3rd to the Charger game in 94 and Super Bowl loss to the Cowgirls in 1995. I lost sleep over the Charger game. Dennis Gibson kept knocking the ball away from Barry Foster on 4th and 2 whenever I would close my eyes. Yes, lets throw the ball to our running back (who didn't really have great hands) on a low percentage pass on the do or die play of the game. F'ing Earhardt and Cowher got outcoached in that game too. Tim Mckyer "pulled an Ike" and bit on the fake and Pupunu got behind everybody for that TD. Steelers had just run off like 7 wins in a row and looked unstoppable all the way to the SB and lost to an extremely average Stan Humphries. Eerily similar to this year actually...

Re: Worst Steelers Post-Season Loss Ever?
I can't get too upset over this loss. The Steelers were ready to get knocked off following the last two months of this season. The loss to the Patriots in either of the AFC Championship Games were second to the two Super Bowl losses oh and that loss to San Diego--those are the too five. You can't think that this team was going anywhere but out of the playoffs. Tebow just saved it from being the Patriots and that would have been an ass kicking.
Re: Worst Steelers Post-Season Loss Ever?
Absolutely not.
This year's team - especially the playoff edition - offered a multiple choice roster:
a) the injured
b) the aged
c) the inexperienced
Expecting them to advance past the divisional round was a pipe dream.
'Ever' is a long time but you opened the door so the honor still goes to the '76 squad filled with Hall of Famers that went to Oakland and got manhandled. There were fewer teams in the league then thus concentrating the talent, Oakland was a big, bad rival worthy of all the press, and both the written rules and the physical conventions of the game at the time meant that it was an absolute slugfest in the playoffs especially between two teams that openly hated each other. Yes Bleier and Harris were out injured but a team coming off two Super Bowl wins could only manage a touchdown in the game.
It's easy to equate the 70s with the Steelers Dynasty and rightly so but many, including me, think of '76 and '77 and what might have been.

Re: Worst Steelers Post-Season Loss Ever?
My last 2 digits of my username are based on the year I was born; 1976. I didn't become a fan, Steelers or sports fan in general, until my middle school years. That's why I can only compare the worst playoff defeats in franchise history to those I have witnessed personally.
I didn't list The Superbowl defeats in 1995 and 2010 in my top 3, specifically because The Steelers were the underdog in both games.(When they faced Dallas, I believe they were a 14 point underdog, and nearly pulled off the upset.) However, they still hurt a lot because they were for The SB Championship, so I would understand if someone were to list them before The 1994, or 2001 AFC Title Games, or The Wild Card loss to Denver. It's all subjective, anyways.

Re: Worst Steelers Post-Season Loss Ever?
The worst postseason loss ever is Superbowl XXX.
In 2005, when Cowher and Burress showed the world that the Patriots scare and own them in that AFCC drubbing was a pretty close second, considering they were outclassed, outcoached and outhustled. Even the comedy of errors that was their last superbowl loss didn't reflect the amount of heartlessness and fear Cowher and company approached the game with. That and Burress was shoved around like a cunt all night.
I'd still put Tebow's unearned playoff win in the top five though.

Re: Worst Steelers Post-Season Loss Ever?
In 2005 Roethelisburger was a rookie and he was clearly not comfortable in the playoffs. He was worn out by the pressure of the season and the Steelers were lucky to have beaten the Jets the game before. The worst tragedy of that game was that the Patriots were undoubtedly stealing signals--Brady threw some passes that he didn't even think twice about. You have to put the loss to the Cowboys on 96 as the worst post season loss. If you recall O'Donnell pissed that game away completely--it was winnable. Plus it was the fucking Cowboys that most of you guys are too young to remember that asshole franchise in the 70s. America's Team bullshit...

While we almost pulled the upset off on Dallas (-13.5) in 1995, it was extremely painful in the WAY we lost. It was the first Superbowl in 16 years for the Steelers. We were down 20-17 with 4:15 left when we get teh ball back, and have a good chance to get the win. It was a very hard fought game were we had the passing and rushing edges on them all game. You sensed that we were going to win this game. Then that awful awful interception to Larry Brown with NOT A SINGLE STEELER within 10 yards. The worst thing about it, IT WAS AGAINST THE COWBOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How that is not on the top 2 of any Steeler Fans' list?
Worse losses than the Tebow loss:
2004 against the patties. (We go 15-1 in the regular season and we completely collapsed in that game)
2002 against the titans. In overtime their field goal kicker flops after being touched and draws a flag that allows him to rekick after his missed FG.
2001 agaisnt the patties. We go in as double figure favorites. Kris Brown's FG attempt is blocked and returned for a TD. Instead of being only 14-6 behind, it swings to a 21-3 deficit.
1994 AFCC against the chargers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmLO67uI ... r_embedded
1976 against the raiders. Enough Said ....
2007 against the jaggies. the league later appoligized of the two blatant holding calls as Gerrard ran for 30 some yards on 4th down which set up the game winning FG.
There is others. But my soul can not take this trip any further down this memory lane.
This tebow loss was not THAT painful, considering we had about 0% chance in winning the Superbowl. The above mentioned games, we had a good team that had a good chance to put a good showing in the big game, but just failed for one reason or another.
Against the broncos, It looked like our team had just walked out of the hospital and on to the field. To further compound the injury problems,Hampton and Starks suffered ACL injuries and Keisel suffered a severe groin injury during the game. We were winning at the end of the season, but we looked like crap. Our season ending games against the rams and brownies looked like we were an .500 team that was already elimiated from playoff contention. (Granted we did beat the rams 27-0, but we still played bad ball).
The only games (IMHO) that we looked like we played like a championship team: Week 2 against Seattle (24-0); Week 7 Against the Cards (32-20); Week 8 against the patties (25-17); Week 9 against the rat birds (20-23) (yes I know we lost, but we still looked good that game) - out side of these 4 games, we played rather vanilla-style games with no memorable highlights.
Re: Worst Steelers Post-Season Loss Ever?
I dont give a fuck who was injured. This loss against Denver was inexcusable and exposed the Steelers as a rag tag bunch of F-UPS. The most glaring atrocity was Dick LeBeau. This team from top to bottom needs to get their shit together BIG TIME. I am seeing Steelers en masse posting happily on facebook when they should be humbly silent and shutting the fuck up

So What the Steelers had no chance of winning the Super Bowl this year. They still should have never losted to a hack team like Denver. That was just poor coaching on both sides of the ball and a embarassment of a lost. I'm with PG on this one Stiller fans need to keep quiet and shut the fuck up.

We shouldn't have lost to denver, but for the above reasons I mentioned, it does not rate as the most painful playoff loss. The most painful ones are where that was a high expectation for the team. (ala 2004 season).
This year we did not play well, except for a small handful of games. We also had ZERO momentum going into the playoffs. It was not that we had 0% chance in winning the SB this year, it was more like our team was completely stagnate. You can just sense our season was over after the 49ers. Yea, we beat the rams 27-0 in a sloppy fashion against the worst team in the league, but we really shit the bed against the brownies, in which should have been a warmup game for the playoffs.
Was it frustrating that we lost to the broncos? YES!!
Painful?? Not really, except if one of your co-workers is a "t*b*w fan", which THAT ceased very quickly a week later.

It really took you to that point to notice that? As mentioned above, we did not exactly have a good season ALL YEAR.
Next year could be worse. We need to re-build the defense from the ground up. The statement of "old and slow" at the beginning of the season was a more painful true then we wanted it to be. Harrison, Farrior and Polamalu can only anchor the defense for only so many years.
I see our defense being back on top of the league in about 3-4 years, when the defensive ranks are filled with the younger players that we have been drafting over the last few years and the next 2-3 years ahead.

Wow. That repeated statement has NOTHING to do with what I said. Good Job. Those kind of responses are why this board has been slowly dieing.

PG, question; do you give a fuck who was injured?
The Steelers will only be as successful as Big Ben is!
