Haley or Van Pelt as Steelers O.C.?

Postby Steelers76 » Tue Jan 31, 2012 8:19 pm

I saw a report on KDKA News that The Steelers are going to be interviewing former Chiefs Head Coach Todd Haley, as well as former Tampa Bay Bucs QB Coach Alex Van Pelt for The Steelers vacant Offensive Coordinator position.

Don't know much about Van Pelt,(as a coach), but I think Todd Haley would be a good choice as O.C. here. Thought he did a pretty good job in Arizona in that position, and is one of those guys who is better off coaching in their area of expertise than being a Head Coach.(See Charlie Weiss) Thoughts?

Haley seemed like a bit of a hothead to me. Not a lot of respect from the players it seemed. Maybe thats in the past. He had Kurt Warner and stellar receivers to work with in Aridzona and Whizenhut was looking over his shoulder all the time.

My knee-jerk selection would have to be Haley.......he's a well proven OC.

Personally, I couldn't care less if Haley is a hothead, and/or isn't a "player's coach." He would be there to run The Offense to the best it can be, not make friends or please individuals egos. Actually, I like it when coaches put diva players in their place, as Haley has done with T.O., Kurt Warner, and Boldin over the years.

Maybe that's what this offense needs...less buddy buddy from the OC and more of a whip-cracking disciplinarian. He and Momlin can play good cop/bad cop.

Place a call to Larry Fitz to see what he thinks of TH...

Whoever it is...
Could we compensate based on these 3 criteria:
1. Time of Possession : Rank in top 3 at EACH Qtr mark of schedule (every 4 games)
2. 3rd Down conversion % over 60.3. Points scored by Offense: Same ranking criteria as No. 1

These 3 will keep "D" off the field, keep late game suspense down, utilize the talent we have AND MAKE FOR SOME DAMN PRE-GAME PLANNING for a change. Guarantee playoffs,

Thoughts?

I personally like the fact that the Haley family has some Pitt pedigree. I just hope whoever gets the nod recognizes the instrumental part the bubble screen plays in our offense. Gos fordbid we would eliminate that gem from the clipboard.

The bubble screen is only effective during the first series of either half, when the "D" is cold. The NE Pats run this play only in these situations. It only works if the other team is surprised by it, which means it's not run very often. Run too often, it surprises nobody, and opposing "Ds" look for it as a pick-six opportunity. (Terrell Suggs actually picked one, but stumbled afterwards. The backward lateral called an incompletion was partly a result of the "D" in position to snuff it out, and Ben trying to compensate for the defensive position.)

Terrell Suggs bubble screen read and pick: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-high ... es-Big-Ben

Looks like Haley will be the guy. It will be interesting how Ben responds to him.
Whenever Tom Brady loses, it's always someone else's fault.
