Butler possibly hired as Colts DC

Postby SteelThatDon'tRust » Sun Jan 29, 2012 12:00 pm

Per Schefter on ESPN. So Dick is around for at least one more year while his supposed replacement in waiting is now gone becausxe he didn't get his shot soon enough. Of course we know nothing, but why did Butler stick around so long? My guess is that he was the DC in waiting. Why is he now leaving? Perhaps b/c he thought last year or this year would be his year, but Dick has decided to stay so Butler is walking (been LB coach since 99'?). :( I don't like it, not one bit. Tomlin has his work cut out for him now.

Wow, I hope this isn't true.

I have witnessed in my business career "leadership" sticking around too long and the next generation of guys leaving in frustration. Then the 2nd tier of backups gets elevated all the way to starter. It's not pretty.

No doubt Butler will get an offer from Indy. Rooney needs to counter it with an offer to Butler if he is indeed the planned next guy, and tell Dick thank you for your service. Exactly like he did for Arians. We are likely going to have to go out of house for the new OC, you don't want to go out of house for the new DC too, if you think "continuity" has been a major reason for your franchise's success. Which I, for one, do.

With this amount of "change" my vote would be to clean house. The cap issue is too big to try to weasel your way through it. Hampton, Farrior, Smith, Hines, Memo, great players all but unable to contribute to their cap value. Even if they take cuts, we have to groom the next crew and it's time to move on. I think new coordinators, a lot more starting positions open, could serve as one hell of a motivator.

And I know how to get Ben over being "miffed" that Bruce is a Dolt -oops I mean Colt, freudian slip there. Tell him he's going to be running the hurry-up a lot more. First, I believe Ben is the best in the NFL at it, or at least one of the best. Two, it helps counter the weakness of our O-line. A hurry-up with a lot of dinks and dunks. We don't have the tall field stretching receiver either. Put Sanders in the Welker role and let AB, Wally, and Cotch rotate in as receiver with Mendy out of the backfield.

I played in a golf outing one time w/ Butler & the guy was as dumb as a bag of hammers. He as much as said that the incredible quality of the LB's he coached (Harrison, Farrior, etc) was as much responsible for holding onto the job as his own ability. I really don't expect an OC to be a rocket scientist, but this guy was far from it!!

Too many of these players & coaches for the Stillers think that SB wins should give them lifetime job security & they get fat-and-happy. Some new hungry blood would be good for this team.
