Still Trap-- on offense, you say Redman fits what the Steelers do better? Under Arians what exactly do the Steelers do? Throw bubble screens? Have Ben run around trying to throw the ball down the field with routes that take ten minutes to develop? I haven't notice a coherent running game for any back, but not that I like Mendenhall either. You are right about that.

Good Post! I agree we need to drop ward (ouch!), but I don't think bringing in a tall receiver is a priority. If we bring everyone back, we're still pretty well set at that position. Maybe bring in a developmental guy or two for long term. I just can't see drafting high or seeking out a WR in free agency.

What's Limas Sweed up to?
We should be fine with Redman, shame it took an injury to give him any significant amount of carries?
Week 2 we performed well, giving Reman and Mendy a share of the load, so then we ignored it for much of the rest of the season . .
even if we do do what is suggested in this post, the one thing that won't change is the Arians/Ben thing . . . .
I think we'll still see Potsie playing too . . . . shocking
going one way, next year and that is South.

Thank you for your post. You seem to touch on the same things I've been blabbering about all year... TIME TO CHANGE! I can't say Scarians or LeBlow's names without cringing

COULD NOT DISAGREE MORE!!!
We should NOW understand WHY Momlin and the other Stillers were rabidly courting Plex this summer: the red zone efficiency is awful, all of our receivers are small, and Heath is needed for blocking because of the inept offensive line.

The tall receiver can be a TE or a WR. Ben has no height to throw to at this time, save for Miller, and he blocks more than receives. Additionally, Miller is not a guy who is gonna go up and jump for a ball, even though he will outfight for it if is in reach.

Re: New Article: What NEEDS to Happen - 2012
I concur Redman should top Mendenhall on the depth chart, although I think it's a subtle difference that wouldn't affect touches or playing time *that much.* If you need a back you can workhorse for a few games a year (i.e. 25-35 carries) I'd use Redman. Mendenhall is more of a third down/breather back in my view.
I don't get hung up on racehorse stats (height, weight, etc.) While you certainly don't want a crew of midgets who run 4.7 40 times it comes down to discipline in route running, sold fundamentals, and hands. right now we have one of the finest receiving corps top to bottom in the league. We already have a large redzone target in Heath Miller, but Arians refuses to integrate him into the offense correctly.
Hampton isn't getting overpaid as much as Woodley is, but releasing or restructuring him isn't a bad idea, especially since they're getting the same caliber of play out of steve wallace.
Farrior should have retired or been relegated to a b-team status in the ILB rotation.
Chris Kemoatu is a decent backup guard who right now is making starter money. Cut him or restructure a deal that reflects his actual abilities. Colon is dogshit and shouldn't be retained for any reason.
William Gay is indeed a nickel back at best. This guy shouldn't be starting. Hopefully they won't add him to the string of players who are getting money out of proportion with their actual impact on the field.
Woodley is about as good as Clark Haggans and he's making world class money. That's the contract Timmons should have gotten. I'm hoping that fact that Worilds came in with no dropoff should be a red flag to him to step up, but given the team's current culture I doubt that will happen.
As the article indicated, a lack of overall speed and age on this defense is what has them limping near the end of the season and we're already late in building for the changng of the guard on the D's roster.
The Steelers organization needs to give Tomlin the latitude to hire and fire his coordinators. Even if LeBeau wasn't a bullheaded strategic dinosaur, the fact that the front office and administration treats that defense, from roster to strategy as Dick's and Dick's alone must change, if Tomlin is to guide this team to a third conference title and 2nd world championship during his tenure.
I can understand the excessive loyalty to LeBeau to a certain degree, but Arians simply hasn't earned his paycheck as a coordinator who happened to be there and benefit from having a few exceptional players like Roethlisberger, Ward, and an awesome young corp of receivers.

Found this online:
THIS IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT:
24. Pittsburgh Steelers: Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford: If the success of Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, Aaron Hernandez, and Vernon Davis showed us anything this season, it’s that a dynamic tight end can turn a good offense into a great one. Heath Miller’s had a great run in Pittsburgh, but Fleener would be a tremendous addition to the already potent Steelers offense. Andrew Luck’s top target at Stanford, Fleener is a 6-foot-6, 240-pound athletic big man who could make an immediate impact on the next level. Other pundits have different tight ends as their top prospects at the position. I love Fleener’s NFL potential and think he’s the first one off the board come April.

Re: New Article: What NEEDS to Happen - 2012
Gay actually had a pretty damn good season starting. But yeah, I agree that he's a nickel at best. I'd really like to see Curtis Brown in that spot. He's a stud. I doubt we extend Gay for that reason.
ILB Vontaze Burfict needs to be drafted in the first if C/G Peter Konz doesn't fall to us. Burfict is about as relentless as James Harrison. He'd give us a huge upgrade over Farrior/Foote in coverage plus he can rush the passer very well.

A mock has Konz going at 19:
19. Chicago Bears: Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin: Apparently, one of the main reasons Jerry Angelo is no longer the GM in Chicago is his inability to build an adequate offensive line. That horrific offensive line, paired with Jay Cutler’s injury, ended up costing the Bears a spot in the playoffs this year. The Bears drafted one Badgers offensive lineman in Gabe Carimi last year and would be wise to take another in Konz. He's a mauler who can play either guard or center at the next level.
The same mock does not even have Burfict in the first round, so maybe we could snag him in 2...?

While it would be nice to have a stud tall receiver in the mix, my point is it is far from a priority. We need to get younger on defense and better O linemen first. As far as "rabidly" courting Burress (and it's Plax by the way), that's a joke! The only way he was coming back is on the cheap, we didn't have the cap room to give him any real money. And as far as the "Momlin" comment, can we just call people/teams by their freaking actual names? It is this kind of silly juvenile crap that really turns me off to this website. Am I wrong to assume we're all adults?

Re: New Article: What NEEDS to Happen - 2012
See post #8, steelersfan. The offense could be more impressive, and could kill in the red zone with a tall stud.
Yes, we need the other stuff, also, but we were 12-4 with a very lame red zone offense.
Mike Momlin needs to treat his players in training camp like men, not like his sons. Momlin it is.

Re: New Article: What NEEDS to Happen - 2012
I totally agree on the Isaac Redman point. Socrates "Twinkle Toes" Mendenhall tap dances way too much, and what would help the Line. other than an influx of new talent, would be a road grater like Redman... I'd also like to see more out of Jonathon Dwyer, and John Clay, provided they keep Clay.
Does anyone think they'll try to sign Burress again since he'll be a FA again?
I also agree on Taunto Farrior, and can they add Foote to that as well? He's just as slow as Farrior is now...
I think they keep Hampton at a reduced rate for 1 more year.
I also agree that Scott, Kemo, and Colon need to go... Kemo's undisciplined, Scott's the human turnstyle. and Colon's injury prone. Drafting an guy to plug in at G, or RT, provided Gilbert's inserted at LT, would be good. I wonder if they'll bring back Starks though...

Re: New Article: What NEEDS to Happen - 2012
I kinda doubt they go after Burress a third time - he's interested in money and himself, just not the guy we want.
Agree with all the rest you wrote - Fat Casey would only be brought back at bargain basement one year! You can get another fat lardass in free agency on the cheap if needed. Fat Casey's fat has reached proportions that it induces constant injuries.
Provided Starks recovers from knee surgery and doesn't eat three elephants, he could be brought back on a one-year back-up insurance.
The time has come that some ROOKIES or 2nd year men need to be inserted as starters and the team needs to have the confidence that the world won't end because of it. Younger generally means not getting hurt so much, save for Pouncey the Fragile Freeloader. Save a couple vets for BACK-UP insurance. Enough of the Stiller Way playing veterans until they decompose!
Comment on Arians: first, good riddance. Second, the league has become such that everything favors the offense. While all of us could point fingers at the defense for not standing stout late in games, clearly Rooney understood that the defense should never have been in those spots with the weaponry at hand on offense. It wouldn't surprise this writer at all if investment is not made in a stud receiving tight end, such as the Stanford TE. You need another tall target so Heath is not alone. It would also not surprise ths writer if a true fullback is added, since stubborn Arians is gone. David Johnson, this writer's most despised Stiller, was a fraud at FB.

Re: New Article: What NEEDS to Happen - 2012
I totally agree that it's time for the young guys to step up. Brown, and Allen shouldn't have to learn the Defense in Spanish, Chinese, and Pig Latin before they get some playing time. I think guys in those spots get better taking the live bullets instead of rotting on the bench. I also agree on the FB position... They need a true FB. What do you think of Wesley Saunders as the second TE, or dead weight? I've read in other publications that he's got good ability... I haven't seen enough of him at all...
If Hampton wants to keep his job with the team 1 more year, Momlin has to make it clear to him that he needs to drop 40 to 50 pounds, or his fat ass will be cut...

I like Saunders a lot. Still would like to see a 6'6" TE like the guy from Stanford.
Re: New Article: What NEEDS to Happen - 2012
How is it that this is like the third draft in a row that we desperately need to address O-line and cover guys in the secondary? Heath Miller is a STUD and the team is apparently really high on this Saunders kid to carry the torch. We are set at TE. We pretty much have two number one WRs in Wally and AB, with Sanders filling in nicely at 3rd and Cotchery and Ward providing veteran presence. We have a franchise QB who is proven in the clutch, in the postseason, and in the clutch in the postseason, as long as he can remain standing. Whoever is carrying the rock, be it Mendy, Red-Zone, Mewelde, or whoever, is not going anywhere thanks to our swiss cheese O-line. If we draft a fucking tight end in the first round I'm going to scream. O-line and cover guys, O-line and cover guys, O-line and cover guys!!!

isfry hit it right on the nose! I predict Saunders will emerge big time next season after a going thru a normal off season - as long as he keeps out of trouble, that is. If you want to get a tall receiver, draft a project from a small school in the later rounds.
Besides, the biggest improvement has already been made with Arians' retirement.
We have enough playmakers on offense that with a new OC and a couple solid additions on the O-line, the offense should vastly improve.
I want to see nothing but OL, CB, or FS drafted for at least the first 3 rounds!
