Trai Essex

Postby Pump-N-Iron » Fri Jul 29, 2011 1:37 pm

Found this quote on the Yahoo! Free Agency Tracker and thought it needed to be shared...

98. G Trai Essex(notes) – One of the many completely mediocre offensive linemen that the Steelers have collected over the past five years. Prototype JAG (“Just A Guy”).

Talk about some guy just collecting a paycheck. If the Stillers didn't totally whiff on draft stiffs like Hills, Urbik, etc Essex would be on the end of the bench for a loser like the Browns or Panthers.

I know some guys like Kemo & Starks etc have panned out OK but doesn't it seem like the Stillers O-line scouts are lacking in track record? (can't count Pouncey because he was consensus 1st rd material). Going further back, other losers drafted high include Farris, Chris Conrad, Paul Wiggins, & the infamous Jamain Stephens.

Delving into the Stillers.com archives, I recall a similar comment from Still Mill about 4 or 5 years ago. I am paraphrasing, but the basic sentiment was something like...

The Steelers are terrible at developing offensive line talent. Unless the player is 'Ready for the Show' on draft day, odds are they will never be anything more than average.

Hey now, if it wasn't for guys like Essex, and Ben wasn't forced to constantly run for his life, we'd never have known how great he was outside the pocket........where he's actually better. Trai deserves our gratitude for being so mediocre, and he's got to feel pretty great about not being expected to live up to much more than being a meatsack with limbs and a head.
