Free Agency Talk

Postby thesteelhammer » Sun May 15, 2011 10:07 am

Not really a surprise, but Accoring to ESPN.com:

The Pittsburgh Steelers may show interest in re-signing impending free-agent DT Chris Hoke this offseason to continue his role as the backup to DT Casey Hampton.

James Walker of ESPN and also KFFL are reporting

The Pittsburgh Steelers likely will not show interest in New York Jets impending free-agent CB Antonio Cromartie this offseason because of possible character questions Cromartie would bring.

we need someone at CB, so they better find their saint.

P.P.G. thinks this is news? :?
did any one think they would?
The Pittsburgh Steelers are not interested in signing free-agent RB Willie Parker even though he has expressed a desire to return to the team.

We have serious issues at NT. Casey can barely play 2 downs at this point in his career and Hoke is beyond ancient. Powe in 6th would have made a lot more sense instead of another 3rd string guard who probably won't make the team. Now we're probably going to go into next years draft with an immediate need at NT and corner depending on how Curtis Brown develops.

I think out NT's will hold up for another season. Hoke might be older, but he doesn't have a lot of milage for many of those years.

CB is the biggest issue this year. ESPN.com's James Walker is saying:
The Pittsburgh Steelers could show interest in Washington Redskins impending free-agent CB Carlos Rogers or Carolina Panthers impending free-agent CB Richard Marshall if they are not able to re-sign CB Ike Taylor.

any thoughts on Rogers or Marshall?

anyone got thought on the PPG's report?

The agent for Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent OT Willie Colon, Joe Linta, does not expect to hear from the team about a new contract once the lockout ends. "They haven't called about Willie in three years," Linta said. "I'm not expecting them to call because they haven't yet. That's the way they do business, and that's fine. But if they do call we'll pick up the phone." Colon's preference is to stay in Pittsburgh. "He loves the team and love the city," Linta said. "But they have to want him, and they haven't shown that yet."

I'm not sure I want Colon, but we don't have much else either.

FOXSports.com's Adam Caplan is reporting

According to multiple sources, the Philadelphia Eagles will show strong interest in Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent CB Ike Taylor once free agency starts. With the Eagles possibly playing more zone and less man coverage in the secondary this season based on the adjustment the defensive line is expected to undergo, Taylor would fit in quite well.

So in all likelihood, there goes our top CB.

USA Today's, Tom Pedulla is reporting :
free-agent RB Tiki Barber (Giants) said that the Pittsburgh Steelers are on a short list of the teams he is interested in signing with once the lockout is over.

I'm not seeing it. anyone got any thoughts on this.

Now Ronde Barber is another story, we could use a CB.

PPG says bringing back IKE is a top priority, but here's they guys they are reportedly looking at as options if we can't

The Pittsburgh Steelers could show interest in Buffalo Bills impending free-agent CB Drayton Florence, Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent CB David Carr and Washington Redskins impending free-agent CB Carlos Rogers if they are not able to re-sign impending free-agent Ike Taylor once free agency begins.

The only positive thing I can say is they all might have better hands than IKE, but cover skills?

I have no idea who Richard Marshall is but I do know quite a bit about Carlos Rogers since I live in Skins Nation. He's actually a pretty solid corner, very physical on the LoS and similar to Ike (he also has stone hands). He played great his first few years struggled a bit this past year. I don't put too much of the blame on him though because Shannahan switched to a 3-4 and didn't have the personnel on DL or the linebackers for that matter. They had no pass rush outside Orakpo (hence drafting Kerrigan). If Ike leaves I would definitely jump on the chance at landing Rogers, especially since he'd be much cheaper.

Chris Carr cannot cover anyone. We are done if he is the cover corner for us. Seems we have several FA issues anyway. Last year, we were fortunate to develop and maintain various depth. This year might be the opposite.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have two restricted free agents to consider re-signing for the 2011 season: QB Dennis Dixon and OT Tony Hills.

no great loss if either leaves. low tenders

So far the Steelers have agreed to terms with cornerback Ike Taylor, placekicker Shaun Suisham and offensive tackles Willie Colon and Jonathan Scott. who were all on their roster last year. That means they 87 players on the roster, three below the new league limit of 90 players for training camp. THEY NEED TO GO OUT AND SIGN THREE IMPACT PLAYERS, PREFERABLYON THE O-LINE AND DEFENSIVE SECONDARY.

This off season isn't shaping up too well. The Patriots are going to be impossible for the Steelers to beat--they had little success in the Brady era and now they are loaded---the Steelers could 't fucking stop Wesley Walker now they have to stop Chad whathisname. Plus all those first round picks courtesy of the stupid fucking Raiders who are now a year more experienced. The Steelers stood pat with an aging team. The competitive balance tips quickly downward. The d backs who couldn't cover anyone in the last two years, don't seem to give you hope that they are going to get better this year.
They did nothing to make a porous offensive line better--in fact hurt it by releasing Adams and Starks. Not that Starks was worth the money--but there is zero depth now when they get people hurt and resigning Colon? Whoopee. The year following a Super Bowl appearance hasn't been really great for the Steelers in the modern era either...

Picking up Jerricho Cotchery was a good move. I'm all about finding ways to preserve Hines Ward. As much as other teams (Baltimore) hate it, I never get tired of seeing his smile 8-)
