Don't blame the prevent
"The prevent defense prevents you from winning".Yeah, heard that a million times but not the case vs Cincy.Steelers were blitzing a ton in the 4th quarter.Problem with the blitz if you get there half a second late you get burned. That's the chance you take. What the defense is lacking is DB's are not making plays on the ball.Another quiet week from Troy,he looks like he's lost a step.

Re: Don't blame the prevent
It seems like Troy has become lost, all-of-a-sudden........ It's as if all those concussions have caught up with him.
I mean, the only time I remember him from this game was being pancaked on the Bengals TD run after the PI penalty.

Whenever Tom Brady loses, it's always someone else's fault.

Re: Don't blame the prevent
I blame the prevent especially on the first touchdown the Bungles got in the second half. Mcfaggot was playing 20 yards off the line and still got burned deep. The third down before that same thing when Owens easily got the first when Bryan lines up 8 yards behind the first down marker.

Re: Don't blame the prevent
Reed blew another filed goal, sure. But last night was the same story as the last two weeks: ZERO pass rush and a shitty o line. I agree, you can't blame the prevent D. You have to blame the reason we have to use the prevent D. Blitzing is quite pointless when it almost never works anymore. But we shouldn't always have to blitz: the D line gets no pressure anymore. And the second reason: our o line sucks dick and Ben doesn't yet have the mojo back to deal with it. THANK GOD center MP seems ok.
You asked with your eyes Trent, you asked with your eyes.

Re: Don't blame the prevent
Is it me or does a 27 - 7 lead seem like a "we aren't out of the woods yet!" type of game?
We're up 27-7, they score to 27-14 and suddenly it feels the lead is shrunk to just a field goal and we know then it's just a matter of time before we're biting our nails.
When WE get behind 27-7 and it seems like it's a blow-out, we'll never get close no matter how much we score.
Brady is looking at this stuff and licking his chops. Hell, they'll dress 1 RB and 9 WR's for this game. Who wouldn't?
15-yd outs and they are wide open all night long????????? Are you kidding me? They'll look at this as just a Div. win and NOT shore up the holes. Troy is NOT what he was, Ike got jaked on 1 of the PI calls and I think Hampton's call was to please Godell who was there. You're 350+ lbs and falling and you have to change direction of your fall because you might hit the QB? Might as well put flags on their hips and stop tackling altogether.
Ass Arians knows absolutely NOTHING OF RESTING THE "D" AND KILLING A FRIGGIN' CLOCK. 3 passing plays for a quick 3 'n out in 3rd or 4th qtr when we were up by 20 I think. Why this guy is even allowed to carry a clipboard is the REAL 8th wonder of the world. Mendy was gassed in 4th , looking to come out for air, WHAT DOES ASS ARIANS DO???? We know what he did.... hand it off to the tired guy, of course. (He runs hard, you've got to hand it to him for effort this yr - team MVP on offense considering OL he has to run behind, hands down.) No way does FWP break the tackles Mendy breaks.
I will give Arians SOME credit,... I thought that first pass to Mendy after fumble recovery was a slick play. That, to me, is a great 3rd down convert type of play that we'll never see again.
I'm betting they'll try to sign Woodley since Worilds is not getting any PT. Can't we just see him for 2 sets of downs per game? Same with Sanders. Get these guys involved. Unles we get home field advantage, there is NO BREAK until after SB in Feb.! Plus, we have to see these guys, Balt. and Cleve (most improved anyone?) again yet.
We should be cool, calm and collected after a win, but, man, I feel this is the calm before the shitstorm. I just don't think the D holds up all year.

Re: Don't blame the prevent
I played basketball in high school. Our team had poor guards. Still, we could beat anyone in our league -- except if we got a big lead and the other side was forced to press all the time. Then, our guards made turnover after turnover and we could not stop the other team.
This is where the Steelers seem to be now. Getting a big lead actually hurts them because the other side is forced to pass all the time and we cannot stop them when they throw the ball all over the field.
Tough stuff. We can expect more of the same until we show we can stop it.
Remember that one year when the D had bad coverage linebackers and no real dime package so teams abandoned the run and just threw all the time? Yuck.

Re: Don't blame the prevent
I think Troy is fine. They were audibling away from his side all night when he lined up near the LOS. He was chasing plays from the back side all night long! Ryan Clark is the real problem with the secondary getting torched every week. He does not provide good coverage over the top and all he's good for is to try and hit someone with his head after they catch the ball. Maybe if Dick had more confidence in Clark's coverage ability we could send more corner blitzes. Seems like they have been effective the few times they were called for. We sure as hell are not getting enough pressure otherwise.
The best moment of the second half was to see Pouncey return to the game. That is one guy we cannot afford to lose! We need to find a way to draft his brother if he is even 75% the player Markice is. I thought the O-line did well with so many injuries and guys playing out of position.
We need to see more throws to Heath and Mendy when they're continuously blitzing. WTF? Also, I saw several plays where Ben could have escaped pressure by simply stepping up in the pocket. Instead, he moves to his left or right into more pressure.
The refs sucked monkey balls especially in the second half. I hope Reed does not cost us big come playoff time! What the hell happened to the idea of Sepulveda kicking off?

Re: Don't blame the prevent
The Prevent let the Bungals back in the game by giving them an easy TD to close the gap to 13 points. The Blitz saved them in the end by putting pressure on Palmer. The Bengals were very lucky to even get close on the games last drive. F the prevent D - the Steelers have the worst prevent D in football. Period.

I agree. I told my wife that if he's done, we're done as far as SB chances. He is probably one of about 5 guys that we can't lose and still have any real shot.

BTW, did anyone pick up Hartwig? And if not, shouldn't we be giving him a call about now?

Screw the kickoff idea, we'll never see that happen. Why,... it just might work - with a little practice during the freaking week maybe? What do kickers and punters do all damn week? WE KNOW THEY DON'T PRACTICE THEIR CRAFT OR WE WOULD SEE PUNTS GOING OUT OF BOUNDS INSIDE THE 20 MAYBE ONCE OR TWICE DURING THE SEASON.
Can anyone tell me why a pro-punter HAS to kick the damn ball straight down the field and MAKE SURE it goes in for TB?
WTF is THAT all about? I thought this guy (rookie year) was money in coffin kicks. If I'm a ST coach, I fine my kickers $ for this crap and bonus for every yd inside the 20 the punt goes out. What does he do all day? Geez, the sideline is your damn friend - a 12th man, if you will - if the guys fields it. Cuts his options by 33%. (Left, right, or straight ahead).
Maybe I'm too simple for this stuff. Call "kick right" and everyone moves their point of attack in that direction with the farside defenders protecting against a return across the field.
