Is time to give Tomlin just a little credit???

Postby PSUPERCY » Wed Sep 22, 2010 10:08 am

When hired he didn't come in changing a bunch of things that were working just to make his mark. In addition to being able to see the bigger picture last year and permitting Troy to heal properly, thus permitting him to return to Pro-Bowl form. He has added the following players to the team via the draft. Most these players a are at least servicable, if not bonafide future Pro Bowlers. If you look at things objectively, we have ourselves a team built to make a run for years to come. (Ahem, w/ a few new O-lineman) A lot of teams can't say that.

Honorable Mention (Worilds and Sylvester, they look that good)

Ziggy Hood
Mike Wallace
Rashard Mendenhall
David Johnson
Lawrence Timmons

I give him credit for not coming in and completely overhauling things that were working before he came in. The past defenses he's worked with were mostly 4-3 defenses. We've seen plenty of other coaches go to a team and immediately insist on changing schemes to what they like, personnel be damned.

Tomlin didn't do that. Our defense was in the upper echelons of the league long before he came in. Since, he's let Lebeau do what he's done for years and focused his attention in other areas.

My only complaint was that I think he tried being too lax last year. I think he was worried that the pressure of coming off a Super Bowl win would wear guys down, so he tried to downplay everything, keep it cool, and it just ended badly. He's still a very young head coach. Mistake are part of that growing process, and we'll likely see more in the near future. But, in the long run, I think he'll be one of the better coaches in the league.

He could stand to improve on in-game tactics.

Going for the 55 yd FG and the T.O. at the 2:05 mark in game 1, for instance. In game 2, another erroneous toss of the challenge flag. He loses more of those than he wins.

I really have nothing to add to that.

However, I will give him some bonus points for that ridiculous coat he wears in the winter. IMO, that was a trademark of the '08 run.

As long as he's posting more "W"s than "L"s he's got my vote. Is he perfect? No. Does he win games? Yes. Good enough for me.

Go Steelers!
