Jeff Reed should not be on KOs!!

Postby PSUPERCY » Sun Sep 05, 2010 11:10 am

Did anyone else see this guy try to slide tackle the returner vs Carolina? Sepulveda kicks it deeper, is faster, and will do more than flail. What is going on here?

I have a feeling we will see some odd splitting of these duties throughout the season. I don't know why; but Seppy getting the harder lean on the duty. I think Seppy is only slightly better than Reed, but that is good enough.

On the other hand, Reed tends NOT to kick the ball out of bounds on kick offs. :D (I know, I know, Sep only did this once.) And Sep's kicks have not gone much further. The advantage of having Sep do it is the possible higher hang time. But I think it's hilarious that people still dog Reed for being a lousy tackler. If Reed needs to be a good tackler and we prefer Sep because he is a decent tackler, that means our ST are still in serious need of repair. Sep and Reed should never have to even come close to the return man. I know it is off topic b/c this is about KOs and not FGs, but Reed is just money most of the time. Way too much complaining about him on this board IMO.

Okay, we're actually bitching about the kicker not being a great tackler? Seriously?

One thing is for sure. Sepuv is the 11th tackler out there. With skippy there's 10

They're on an even keel on kicking off . . .

but Sepulveda can tackle if needed, as shown in pre-season . . . that's an advantage right there.

it's a no brainer to me.

What is the advantage of skippy over Sep on kick-offs? . . . . . . . . . . . (bush rolls by) . . . . . . .

Ok, Seppy tackles better than Skippy. STILL: if either of them have to even come close to the return man, then serious problems remain on the ST. I reiterate: WAY, WAY too much complaining about Reed on this board. He's a damn fine kicker period. And that's all he should have to be good at, period. If we need Seppy doing KOs because Reed can't tackle well, then ST coach needs to be fired immediately.

We also need a kicker that provides some loft and distance in kickoffs to allow the coverage people the extra few steps it takes to disrupt a kick return game. Line drive shots to the 10 or 12 yard line doesn't cut it - nothing a st coach can do when given a kicker by the GM or HC that cannot put it deep. One of the biggest problems noticed by the coaching staff was the lack of support from the outside two men on kickoffs. These are the guys that have to travel the longest distance since most kicks are down the middle - hence, these are the guys that need the additional moments to squash down the return lanes. They are not getting that time. Reed is one of the worst touchback kickers in the league...period. The stats say so. So lets reserve the damn fine talk to field goals.

 I agree with what you say about hang time and distance and should have reserved praise for FGs only. My point is only that complaining about Reed's tackling on KOs is silly. There are other legitimate reasons, those you cite, to complain about Reeds KOs.

I'm not necessarily saying that Reed should kick off, but come on... if we're at the point we have to bitch about a fucking kicker not being able to tackle it's obvious that there are more serious problems with kickoff coverage and that Reed's lack of loft or distance isn't the main problem. You could go in the wayback machine and get Mark Moseley in his prime to kickoff and we'd still have the same issues.
