The Pittsburgh Steelers plan to rely a lot on RB Rashard Mendenhall this season, reports Mark Kaboly, of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said Mendenhall is such an explosive player that the team does not want to take him off of the field. Mendenhall, the team's starting tailback, is expected to serve as the team's third-down back, goal-line back and possibly also as their short-yardage back. The team plans to use him far more than the 242 carries he had last season

I hope they DON'T run him that hard. You give him that many carries, he'll be out of football in three years, IMO. We have Moore and Redman, and they might keep Dwyer on....no way you ought to be running Mendenhall 30 times per game.

If he coughs up the ball like he has in preseason, you can bet his number of carries will be cut down.

I hope Tomlin learned his lesson with FWP. I remember him saying at one point that he doesn't believe that you can give one back too many carries. And that he would, "Run him 'till the wheels come off." Well, he did, and Willie's wheels did come off that season. And no offense to Mendy, but Redman needs to get the Goal-line carries.

NFL running backs have such short career spans anyway better to use him now than wish we hadn't. What are we saving him for? For 2014? Get him the ball 300+ times this season.

I am surprised to see anyone on this board not want us to run more with Mendy.

I only saw Mendy fumble once this preseason

But he only carried the ball 18 times and fumbled within his 5th carry this preseason. Not a good start. Particularly given all of the attention I expect the Steelers have given the problem from a year ago. To make a point, at that fumbling rate, if he gets 300 carries this year he will have fumbled 16 times. The dude still carries the ball like a loaf of bread.
