It really seems like he's gone after this free agency. And that's not a good thing.


It actualy pisses me off when people bring up his weight issues, or this and that about lethargic plays.


People seem to forget the travesty at nose tackle before Casey came in. We didn't have a single player who could anchor the line since Joel Steed. Do you guys remember Kendrick Clancy and all the other draft picks we spent trying to find a solid nose tackle?


I'm really not going to be thrilled when Casey leaves and you start seeing teams have their way with our defensive trenches.


For anyone and everyone who hates Casey Hampton and supports his departure, answer this one question:

Name me another Nose Tackle who's made multiple pro bowls in our franchise history. Go ahead.

I've always appreciated Casey as one of the players who doesn't talk a lot, but produces a ton. It concerns me to hear that he is as upset as what I've been reading.

If Hampton will play at an elite level then he should be paid like one of the "franchise players" over the next couple seasons. Dirt, I know exactly what you mean about the NT situation, and how critical Hampton has been to the Steelers over the years. I personally wouldn't choose any other player to line up at NT in Pittsburgh.

Paying Hampton isn't with out risk though. He won't be nearly as effective if he isn't in shape. Signing Hampton commits a lot of responsibility to a man whose body type puts him in constant danger of becoming overweight very quickly. He isn't getting any younger either, so it gets more critical he doesn't pass a point of no return.

I think Tomlin did a good job of a no non-sense approach leading up to camp last season. A similar plan should be put on the agenda. If Casey can retire a Steeler it would be best for everyone.

It seems like they're proposing a possible year-to-year deal with Casey, but I dont think he's going to be too happy with that.


I sure hope we draft a whole bunch 'o linemen this upcoming draft. On both sides of the ball.

The Stillers' FO is very careful about signing players over 30 to long term deals (with the exception of James "B.J." Farrior). I really expect the Stillers will try to sign him to a 2-3 year deal for modest money. If they cannot come to terms, they will let him walk. There are too many holes to fill on that D to spend all your money at 1 position.

I agree that Big Snack has been a force at NT for many years and if he goes, we will miss him.

Hampton's made $31 mill w/ the Stillers since he was drafted. He is old, fat, & unmotivated once he gets a contract.

Instead of trying to pay him & Ryan Clark - who's gonna be in the $4+million bracket - why don't they go after Vince Wilfork, if the Pats don't franchise him?

He's 3 yrs younger, he knows what it takes to win, & he'd fit in on a winner like the Stillers.

I know he'd take more $$ than Hampton but consider this: If you pay Wilfork, say $8m per, and you let Clark walk, you have the extra $ to sign Wilfork.

Next, the draft is absolutely chock-full of Safeties. You can easily find one who can play alongside Troy who is cheaper than Clark.

I know it is NOT the Stillers M.O to go the UFA route, but the mid rd draft busts are killing their depth & they need to make a splash once in awhile.

It doesn't really matter. If Casey leaves, we are drafting either Dan Williams or Terrence Cody; both of which will be fantastic replacements for Snack. Only problem with that is it doesn't help our secondary. William Gay sucks dick.

I don't think they'll take NT in the first round. You don't have to have a star at the position.

Frankly, as fucked up as the team roster is, about any pick other than QB makes sense.

I think the FO lets Hamp walk since he does not ascribe to the Tomlin preference for showing up to camp in shape. I think RClark walks because 1)the quality of his play has deteriorated
(made painfully obvious in 43's absence) and 2)his tendency to go for the kill shot in lieu of making the solid play. I think Skippy walks due to short kickoffs, lessening accuracy and off-field incidents. FWP walks because he is a shell of his former self; the decline began when he broke his leg in StL and he hasn't stayed healthy since.

Make this draft good and deep, Mr. Colbert.

My god, Snockered Pedestrian! If we let ALL four of the important UFA's go, that leaves about $20m/yr available to sign others!! That means Wilfork, a solid backup RB, & a released kicker could all be had in FA. We could then draft the best O-lineman or DB available at #18.

In 2004, THE BEST regular season ever for the Stillers, Chris Hoke STARTED 9 games at NOSE TACKLE. And the Stillers finished 15-1.

So much for the invaluable, irreplaceable stature of FatAss Hampton.
