Townsend thinks he can start.Steelers willing to re-sign him

Postby thesteelhammer » Wed Jan 27, 2010 9:07 pm

Gerry Dulac, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers CB Deshea Townsend said he believes he can start in the NFL even though he will turn 35 years old in September. :?

Gerry Dulac also reports the Pittsburgh Steelers are willing to re-sign impending free-agent CB Deshea Townsend at a reduced rate but there is no sense of urgency to do so at this point. The team believes Townsend wants to return to the team.

Gerry Dulac also seems to think the Pittsburgh Steelers may look to select a cornerback in the early rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft.

If the Stillers think Townsend can still start, they m'as well sign up Lupe Sanchez or Dwayne Washington because they'll do just as well & at a reduced $ rate!!
Townsend is a solid nickel back.

If there is any other starting corner in the league who's 32, let alone 35, I'd like to see them.

I would really like the Stillers to take Kyle Wilson in the 1st round. We really need a shutdown corner in what has become a pass-happy league. Many of the talking heads think we'll take an O-lineman in round one which I feel would be a mistake. Every blitzing defense needs solid corner play which we are sadly lacking!

I’m kind of in the “Deshea is well past his prime” camp even though I really like him as a player and a person. I think he was a really solid, reliable and somewhat unheralded player for a long time. However, I think he’s lost a step (or two) and this defense really needs an injection of young blood in the secondary. Players that have speed and can catch a ball that hits them in the numbers.

I’m not sold on Burnett and Lewis and I’m not sure the coaches are either so I have a feeling the Steelers will take at least one CB in the first few rounds.

I really like Patrick Robinson from Florida State but he might not be around at #18.

I also really like Akwasi Owusu-Ansah from IUP. I think he’s injured, plus he plays at IUP so he'd be a late round acquisition with very little risk. And he’s like 6’1”!

PSUPERCY - so you found a starting 32+ yr old D-back in the NFL (Woodson). Are you trying to legitimize Townsend coming back as a starter since a former Heisman winner has been able to do it????

Absolutely not. I don't think we have one legitimate corner on the roster. I am 33 years old so I like the guys who CAN still do it after 30, like Woodson.

If this was 2003 all over again, I'd say hell yeah re-sign him. It's 2010 though, we need to get younger. If we take a Corner near the top of the Draft, then hopefully they'll be less of a project like Ike Taylor was. I'd still like to see us explore the Free Agent market, but it's unlikely we'd sign that impact player type signing.
Bruce Arians: Proudly carried the Honor of Short Bus All-Star 2007-2011. Good job, and glad you're gone Dumbfuck!!!!!
