Front office picks vs. Fan picks?!?!?!

Postby DL&V » Thu Jan 21, 2010 10:09 pm

I've been looking at mock drafts and reading message boards to get a feel for who we might pick and what positions we might pick.........and I have one question?????????

How is it that the FRONT OFFICE is always seemingly miles apart from the FANS? Obviously, they have 1000% more info then we do but one would swear they don't watch the same games we fans do.

1st rd. pick - Fans would say best LT, CB or NT available to replace Hampton, Gay and/or Colon, Starks.

The F.O. has repeatedly demonstrated that they think our OL is fine.........long term deals for Starks, Kemo and surely for Colon who they say is the teams best OLman. I'm sure Foster and Urbik will be the guards of the future........Legursky and/or Stapleton the center of the future. Hell, it seems they might keep Hills around until Starks retires.

OUR OL SUCKS...........WHAT GAMES DOES COLBERT WATCH?????

Fans would think we FOR SURE need a REAL top shelf CB to replace the 5 or 6 horrible ones we currently have. Yet, I'd bet Colbert won't draft ONE CB having drafted the 2 guys last year because some how he thinks they'll be ok in 2010.

Spaeth will get re-signed.
Fox won't move ahead of Farrior.
We won't trade-up to get Rolondo McClain or Dan Williams.

Our the fans that clueless?????? Has Colbert looked at his past 3 HORRIBLE drafts???

Thoughts Steeler fans?

Many fans allow their emotions to override logic....calling for “knee-jerk” reactions.

This is prevalent, throughout Steeler Nation.

While I agree that our OL could use some help (I'd also like to see us draft a good CB too), they played admirably most of the season. As I have pointed out previously, BR7 threw for 4000+ yards and Mendenhall averaged almost 5ypc. I don't think those stats are possible if the OL isn't holding their own at least somewhat.

It's also completely unfair to call our last 3 drafts 'horrible'.

Woodley
Mendenhall
Wallace
Hood

All of those players came out of our last 3 drafts. The first 3 have been MAJOR contributors already and as Hood got opportunities toward the end of the year, he started to show what he can do.

Patience is key here.

I would agree with m1k3 in that the Steelers have had decent drafts. You cannot assume 3rd rounders and on are going to contribute much, especially right away. The 2nd day of the draft you are just looking to find a possible gem in the draft and nothing is guaranteed. However, striking out in rounds 1 & 2 can set your team back significantly. With that said, the Stillers are doing a pretty damn good job of it.

I want a SHUT-DOWN corner or safety in Rd 1. Best availiable.
I want FOX over Farrior, NOW. Can live with Hoke and mid-rounder if Hampton goes away.

2nd Rd is the other shut down (safety or corner)

I want Sean Lee or Josh Hull (or best avail LB) in 3rd or 4th RD for "Buck" if Fox can't get it done. Get this guy (whoever it is) ready for his 2nd year to start.

Personally, Mendy at 5 yds a pop with NO LEAD MAN? Not shabby! If FO calling "Idiot Arians" out for more run orientation, then Tank (not Davis) steps up to learn to move out the 'backers in lead blocking. Gosh, where's Kreider?
OL not great but D needs most help NOW (age is a factor now). Get OL in 5th, 6th rds.

A good OC would know how to slow an 8-man front. Screens, quick hit passes, underneath patterns and a backfield set that doesn't give away the play. Oh yeah, "No FB in MY offense." (My bad) I guess deception won't be in "anyone's" plans for the foreseeable future. Love to see Logan in short crossing patterns (wallace too!) BUT..... ah, .....screw it....

Good stat BUT misleading? How much was Ben's holding on too long and not tossing away?
How much can be attributed to assinine play calling and broadcast formations, i.e. empty backfield with no audible options, etc.?

Compare sacks from "empty set" vs sacks with a back in the formation? Might be a better "realistic" number since Brucie goes empty set so much and 8-man fronts can tee-off on him.

Granted, sacks HAVE TO BE ADDRESSED, AND NOW (!!!), but with no backfield support, 8-man fronts that know this, and patterns that take receivers to the state capitol and back, no freakin' wonder.

Pass on running downs and run on passing downs is as good a place to start as any. But a "FB in THIS offense" is what is needed.

Compare sacks now to sacks when Kreider was around to pancake Ray Lewis. That might be interesting stat too.

i will agree that a lot, possibly as many as half, are ben's fault for not being able to throw the ball away when necessary. but there were also a lot of times where he was able to avoid the sack because of his size and strength.

and i'm sure manning and brady have their fair share of empty-backfield sets while opponents are definitely not scared of their rushing game. manning, brady, and brees (in obvious pass-first offenses) have a combined 46 sacks.

manning had 65 more pass attempts and 40 less sacks in 2009, and in 12 seasons has been sacked 27 fewer times than roethlisberger in 6 seasons. while never been sacked more than 5% of them time, ben has never been sacked less than 7.9%.

my concern is less about winning games, because we've been able to win super bowls, but more about the longevity of his career.

arians should give more safety outlets
ben needs to learn to throw the ball away
and our line needs to give him more than 2 seconds

Kreider's last year with the steelers was Ben's highest sack%: 10.4

Only 2005, with 23 sacks (7.9%), was remotely close to acceptable.

Edit: after Bettis left, Sack totals jumped from 30,23 to 46,47,46,50.

Whisenhunt and Grimm were around in 2006 for 46 sacks.

Offensive scheme has everything to do with these great points.

I guess my main point, and I admit I am "biased beyond salvage" at this point, I lay this at the feet of Arians who does NOT seem interested in correcting it (offenseve creativity and counter punches)and now at MT who appears to have signed off on this scheme.

I, too, fear for a shortened career for Ben if he doesn't smarten up.
