If Jeff Reed Is Re-signed For Next Season....?
If Jeff Reed is re-signed for next season, do you think he'll handle the kickoff duties, or will another Kicker be brought in just for that reason? While I'm not really crazy about another Kicker who just kicks-off taking up a valuable roster spot, I'm even less wild about seeing the opposing team constantly starting off at their own 35-40 yard line.(If it isn't returned for a TD, that is.) What do you think? Discuss.

The Steelers sent Reid a pretty clear message during last off season that they were no longer interested in his services. They really low balled their contract offer. Let the auditions begin!

Reed is money when it comes to field goals. Maybe if they'd've paid him his, his kick offs would go a little further (and I swear I remember that he used to consistently kick into the EZ so I'm suspicious about what's going on lately). I'd rather not see him go. He's clutch and doesn't get rattled and that can't be taught.

Unfortunately, he's the ONLY guy that can kick at HF. If you ever get a chance, examine how many steps Reed takes on his kickoffs. I see other kickers take 2-3 more steps than Reed does, on the kickoff. He needs to take a few more steps.

I'd guess he'll be asking for $2.5mil + per year...........that is very pricey for a kicker..........too much IMO........let him walk.
Remember, the Steelers let HoF kicker Gary Anderson walk when he wanted a raise.
Draft boards show the kickers from Ohio State and Alabama as the best.......grab one of them in the 5th or 6th rd.

Yeah, Reed had another pretty good year in the kicking dept. He was perfect on PATs, and missed only 4 FGs.(2 of the misses were from beyond 50 yards, I believe.) Based on those stats, he probably deserved Pro Bowl Consideration. Unfortunatley, as already chronicled, his kickoffs sucked, as I believe it was his worst full season effort for touchbacks since he started with The Stillers at the end of The 2002 Season. If Reed is re-signed, they either need to find someone else to kickoff, employ a different strategy on kickoffs,(I.E.- kick it straight up in the air so it can be fair caught at around the 30 yard line, have Reed start line drive kicking it as hard as he can, etc.) Or they can make no changes and hope for the best, but expect the worst.

I remember the same thing. Whenever two brilliant minds such as yours and mine have the same recollection, independently, then it's a fact. Furthermore, being old and having seen a lot, I'm remembering that this is a pattern followed by all of the Steeler kickers. Now that's either a result of coaching or something utterly fantastic such as the opposition purposely manipulating the earth's gravitational field whenever our guys kick.

I'm going with the gravitational field therory. He's clutch usually (Chicago) from inside of 45, but if you keep him for the right price you have to bring in someone for kickoffs. If not, your giving up points with field position. How many fewer clutch kicks would you need if we could kick the ball high and deep? Even average would be a substantial improvement.

i don't think they'd use up a roster spot just for kickoffs.
reed will do some work to come into camp a little stronger. then he'll kick a few balls into the endzone and front office will say "awesome! here's a contract extension!"
then he'll slack off and return to business as usual.

I'd like a logical plausible explanation as to why each and every one of our kickers begins their career by booming their kicks into the end zone, and then after not too long they end up always kicking short. Just why is that, huh? Don't tell me they all get worn out or disgruntled.

It’s the confluence. That together with the shallow water table works in such a way to reduce the scrotum, thereby causing the kickers legs to be less flexible. There. You got the secret out.

Delta, it's not the confluence, it's the breeze coming off the lake. Just ask Bubby Brister....

Reed's short kickoffs, off-field antics, and suddenly questionable reliability will hasten his return
to Carolina.
to Carolina.

Having drunk as much Iron City Beer as I have in the past I'd have to agree that that's both logical and plausible.
