Re: New Article: The Season of No Reason
Unfortunately I think this pretty much sums it up. A well thought out article. On thing you left out was the poor special teams play. That however may have been offset by the horrific punting last season. Is there any reason that instead of having a 5th WR that’s never used you couldn’t bring in a kickoff specialist? Or how about if you’re going to use a TE as a blocking FB you only have 2 TE active and use an extra OL if necessary. When the 2nd and 3rd TE combine to catch like 10 passes you might as well just use an additional OL. It’s not like the other team is going to worry about you fooling them 10 times a year for a total of 50 yards. One of the 2 big gripes I have with Airheadians is he uses the 2 TE as a threat, but doesn’t actually throw to the 2nd TE. How much of a threat is that? The other problem for Bens uncle Brucey is his situational play calling. I lose bodily fluids every time we go shot gun on 3rd and less than 2. I don’t care if you throw 100% of the time, but at least have the threat of the run. We don’t have a pile driving OL, but some deception helps.

deltadweller,
I couldn't have said it better if I tried.
/agree 100%
I'm pretty sure I read it here (Stillers.com) that in Pgh, 'TE' stands for "Tackle Eligible". We got H. Miller and that was supposed to go away, but alas...

Re: New Article: The Season of No Reason
The post by Palmer Sucks and the response by DD sums up everything that I have felt about this season. I would like to add one thing. I felt at half time, during every game this year, that we were going to win the game. After the third quarter, I was sure that we would win. We would find a way. We had the better players.
The letdown was pass defense, and LeBeau's play calling. If you have a defensive backfield, that you know is going to struggle to defend the pass, load up on the blitz. Why not bring all the heat that you can muster. If you are going to potentially give up a big play anyway, go out with your guns blazing. At least in this way, if you don't get to the quarterback, you will give the offence time to come back. This year, I felt that the 4th quarter defensive play calling was passive. It was painful to watch.

SIGH, the comments on Lebeau's defensive schemas, slow secondary and rushing 3 along with Ryan improving on our techinques is most troubling

PalmerSucks: (And he did today in his playoff game!) RIGHT ON!
Great insight. Added comments all worthy of thought as well.
I do wonder. Do these OC's & DC's ever watch other teams and say, "I like that! I think we can do that and here's how." How much "ego" keeps these guys from seeing the obvious? Or admitting they don't have all the answers.
I say Indy will have problems getting it going after 3-4 week layoff. It sure hurt Cincy and Saints might not be all that! We could have had a shot. IF we stop Balt on 3rd and forever, but then they convert on 4th & 5. Season ends right there. We had them beat with a 2nd string QB who can move (at least we THINK he can move, he did run effectively twice so we had to stop that). Flacco is not the answer and neither is Palmer. We should the king of the hill in this div.
No reason we should not be in the dance. Blame stops in the coaches lounge and film room.
Great piece, PS.
