Steelers: Zierlein out, Arians stays
Wednesday, January 06, 2010
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Steelers have fired offensive line coach Larry Zierlein and told Bruce Arians he will be retained as the team's offensive coordinator, the Post-Gazette has learned.
Arians, who has a year remaining on his contract, had a long meeting today with Coach Mike Tomlin and was told he will return in that position in 2010.
Under Arians, the Steelers offense produced a 4,000-yard quarterback, two 1,000-yard receivers and a 1,000-yard running back in 2009 for the first time in franchise history.
Even though the running game improved this season from their Super Bowl season in 2008, averaging 112.1 yards per game, Zierlein was dismissed after Roethlisberger was sacked a personal-high 50 times this season.

50 sacks is a lot - BUT you cannot blame them ALL on the O-Line. Ben has to take credit for causing many of them because he is too stubborn to throw the ball away.

that and empty backfield sets that seem to half the time result in sacks. who's at fault for that? ARIANS.

Re: NO!!!! Another year of BA :(
This is bullshit...
Why did Ben get sacked a zillion time the past few seasons? Some say he holds the ball to long...true, but having a dumb ass OC call pass play after pass play is the culprit.
Cooks article on the Gazette was a joke...He must of been watching a different Steelers Offense than I did.
Arians has no clue how to game plan or how to adjust during half time...He's totally baffled in all aspects of the game...5 wides/no back = sack...2 minutes and a TO left and he calls 3 deep balls = loss...The guy is a tool.
This obviuously stems from Ben getting what he wants....shame...he needs to be taken down a rung or two and hit with a dose of reality on how Arians is dragging this offense down and his health along with him. Ben simply can't take this type of punishment much longer and expect to play in the NFL.
The only thing we can hope for is a BA stroke or some type of accident to occur...thats the only way we'll have any shot next season.

How? what was...? I mean, why...?
This is leaving me speechless. I can't fathom why he was kept on the team. Sure, it was the failing D and shitty spec. teams that mortally wounded us this season, but how many of those games did the offense fail in the RZ?
So MT gets one more season. Cause when BA fails and falters, AGAIN, then MT has to take responsibility.

Maybe with a better OC, Ben might have learned to do that............
I'd rather have an OC who the QB hates but makes the QB better, than an OC who the QB likes but the bad habits are never addressed.
Whenever Tom Brady loses, it's always someone else's fault.

Well we know we're getting a new qb coach so maybe that will help him learn when to throw it away, etc.

Ben is responsible for at least 15 of those sacks - probly 4 of the 8 given up in the last Browns gm. I would like to see the stat where Ben took a sack that put them out of field goal range - betcha he did that at least 5 times. i truly believe he'll NEVER throw the ball away because he believes he can convert 3rd & 17 as easily as 3rd & 7.

As much as I wanted Arians to get fired too, I knew it wasn't going to happen once the other guys got canned. What do you guys expect? For them to fire the entire coaching staff and bring in completely new guys? Then you'll all be back here at this time next year bitching and moaning because the team went 7-9 and missed the playoffs again. You can't change everything at once. Between the ST coach, the OL coach, and Arians, Arians did his job the most effectively.
