Arians finally called a good game?
Is it me or was this one of the better OC playcalling games? Good pass/run balance, some play action, some rollouts, designed screens, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I still think we should replace him if there is anyone of any pedigree available, however this was the first game in a long time where I was not able to totally call the next play as I can usually do, and he called some plays that action game Ben/offense some options vs. Ben dropping back and sending everyone 15+ yards downfield, etc.

How about the way we ran the ball down the field during the last series and eating the clock when BR was supposedly hurt. Looked like old-time Stillers football. Where the hell was that all season?

It's nice that he'll be going out on a high note. Here's your hat, there's the door, now get the fukk out....
Re: Arians finally called a good game?
He called a good game but I don't think it was because of his own initiative. Tomlin's been hinting that he wants a more balanced approach and I think that he finally hammered Arians. The results were positive.

Liked the rollouts and all but holy cow, "Let's see here, we'll pitch to Holmes like a reverse then have him chuck it as far as he can, even tho he's never been a QB. Yeah, that's the ticket. They'll never even suspect it. I mean, if we tried it with Hines, they KNOW he's been a QB and we've done this play a hundred times in his career, right?,... I think it's been a hundred or so, so they'll suspect it 'cause we do it so often. Why, I think we even it his rookie year. Right?"
Come on, you're trying for the playoffs, no problem with the gimmick play, but use the right damn people.
Did you all read the article in the paper about Arians? His career path and quotes? Using players for what they do best, putting them in position to succeed? Who the heck was HE talking about?
What drivel. Get out, ...get the %&%$ out!

Re: Arians finally called a good game?
yeah that trick play was asinine.... how about moore or hines on an option ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE FIELD?? have holmes try that pass was just amazingly stupid in that spot. For all the trick plays that Malarky ran earlier this decade, I recall few that were extremely high risk like that one yesterday.
I really do hope they fire him.... I'm not one to rush to judgement, but too many times when it really seemed to me that there was an obvious call to make based on down and distance and situation, he just did not call the right play.... it all started for me on 3rd and 6 vs. the Jags in 07 playoffs....3rd and 3 vs. the Chiefs, 3 and whatever vs. the Ravens, etc etc...

Actually guys, if we can keep Willie and Rachard and Areans calls em like he did yesterday, I think we'll be ok with him

Re: Arians finally called a good game?
Rick, Dude, gimme what you're smokin'!
Last game, he "finally" gets it? Puh-lease. Too many times, too many opportunities, too many missed-placed ideas. Leopard can't change his spots, he'll be the same. No FB in HIS offense. No way. Yeah, we piled up some numbers but we still can't defend our title. 15-1 year we dominated clock time, wore people out. (was Cowher who then pulled the rug and went even more ultra conservative in playoffs that we lost it.)
I loved his TD's to MeMo in Packer game. Short wing passes behind blocker Miller. One was called back but criminy, where were these things when we were struggling unless they were new wrinkles. These are the type of plays WE ALL ARE TALKIN' ABOUT TO MOVE THE FREAKIN' CHAINS on 3rd & 3, 3rd & 5, for crying out loud. NOT bombs, not delay running plays across the backfield (KC), etc.
He had ZERO interest all year in moving the chains or using the clock, blowing out opponents when we had leads.
Bruce, time for someone else's "message board" to use up space on you. Take your pictures or whatever it is you have and go.

Only problem I had with him were some goal-line calls right before the FG that made it 27-10.
It was third-short, and the Steelers could have gotten a first down at the 1. it screamed out for a conservative two-down approach to get the first down.
Instead, Arians called that weak-assed pass to Mendenhall, and then Tomlin went for the FG.
I knew the Steelers were in trouble because even though Tyler Thigpen was the 4th-string QB behind Pat White, he had thrown passes in the NFL before, so I knew Lebeau's defense would be in trouble.
We needed to make it 31-10 there...even the Steelers' D would have been hard-pressed to surrender 21 points.

The Holmes reverse pass didn't bother you? When he's NEVER done it before and we have Hines who was a QB at Ga (12 yrs ago but still, at least he has experience throwing the thing)? And we're fighting for playoffs?
I repeat, Arians has absolutely NO INTEREST in moving the chains or using up the clock, even when we're struggling on "D" (keep them off the field). He HAS TO GO.

My problem with that was not the call, but the design (like Mill mentioned).
A deep hash-to-hash pass was stupid- we never even asked Randle El to make a pass like that.

Here's where I disagree.
I don't think Arians has no interest in moving the chains.
I don't think he has faith that with our ragged O-line that we CAN play grind-it-out football.
Plenty of times in 2007, and even at times in 2008 and 2009, Arians tried to play "turtle football" and sit on a lead.
In 2007, it worked- somewhat.
In 2008 and 2009- not so much.
I do find it funny, BTW, that after years of complaining about Cowher Ball that people on this site are longing to have it back

Re: Arians finally called a good game?
I think Arians is just an idiot who has no feel for the game or situational football.
My vote is definitely not a return to “Billy Ballâ€. I think what the Stillers need to do is have a balanced attack that keeps opposing defenses guessing. Obviously, half of that equation is running the ball. Unfortunately, under Arians, there were a grand total of 3 running plays: up the middle, off left guard and off right guard. So, keeping offenses guessing was certainly not a factor. If those plays are working and you can “impose your willâ€, great. If they’re not, you try something different. But we all know how great Arians was at in-game adjustments – ha ha.
I have seen plenty of other teams run sweeps, pitches, misdirection plays and so on with a lot of success so I know they’re still legal in the NFL. And there are other ways to establish a running game besides "ram it right down their throat Billy Ballâ€. Granted, we don’t have studs like Faneca and Hartings anchoring the O-line any more. But that’s even more reason to get a little creative with the running game.
An innovative running game coupled with a solid passing game would do wonders for the Stillers offense – and ultimately defense. The offensive weapons are there, we just need a coach who knows how to use them.
So I say, see ya Arians cause that aint you.

Re: Arians finally called a good game?
Kurt, totally agree on all points as mentioned many times here. He is long ball or no ball. Cowher's teams were balanced, used the clock, all the good stuff. His issue was pulling in the ropes in playoffs and not letting it go with what got him there. Arians is just plain stubborn - long ball or no ball. His 3 or 4 runs were broadcast items that we all knew were coming. Get the box stacked with 8 defenders and no audible option, we still run it. Made the O-line look worse than it is. Need a FB to help open holes, lead block. Mendy's 1,000+ yds is impressive considering not played a full season as starter.
We have players for both clutch time and open-up-the-gates time. Arians does not use them as effectively as he could. Holmes tossing a pass (never threw before) across the field? Why not use Hines who at least played QB? No problem with the play, just the players he used for it.
Line coach, ST coach, Arians definitely have to go. LeBeau has some 'splainin' to do as to why we faltered. Troy was missed, no doubt, but Gay and Clark were schooled way too much. Aaron Smith comes back but for how long and how well will he be? Maybe we need to keep Big Snack - trade Spaeth for a bag of chips for him?
I figure we pick around #20. A Cover safety is immediate need then Farrior's replacement, then DB's (?), DL & OL
