What About Skippy Reed?
Just wondering what the thought of Stiller Nation is on the future of Skippy Reed. He's 24 of 28 this year with 2 of those misses at 50+ yds. We all are aware of his key misses against the Bears but has been pretty reliable since then when called on (like this week against the Ratbirds). His accuracy for his career is 83% with a couple of really bad years in 2003-04 (71.9%) and 2006-07 (74.1%).
That being said, is it enough to offset his consistent inability to kick the ball deep on Kick-offs? We all know his prowess against towel dispensers but not on coverage. I wonder if making a change for next year would be a better one if you factor accuracy vs depth.
Of course, some may feel kickers are a dime a dozen....

Re: What About Skippy Reed?
I think reed should stay ... he has been a pretty reliable kicker for the last few years... the kickoffs do piss me off though and of we found someone that could come in just for kickoffs , although is kinda of a waste of a spot of only 53 , it could help.. not allow teams to return every time can be a blessing , as we have seen this year....

I think he's been told not to kick deep. I distinctly remember when we first got him he was booming his kicks to the back of the ez or out of the ez. Then he fell into the pattern that all Steeler kickers fall into that is kicking short. Any theories as to why that's so?

Maybe you're right, but I don't remember him ever kicking into the EZ with any degree of regularity. If you're content with a guy who is accurate a high percentage of the time on kicks from 40 yds or so on in, Skippy's your guy. I don't think he's been told not to kick deep...I don't thinkk he CAN kick deep.
Personally, I'd like them to find a kicker who can deliver from 50 yds plus and boom KOs into the EZ a fair amount of the time. Prater for Denver is the the best statistically, but he's got mile high working for him. I'd settle for somebody like Janikowski, who is 24-27 on FGs, including 6-8 on 50 yds or more AND is averaging nearly 66 yds a K.O. with over 31% touchbacks.

Me? I like his accuracy given Heinz Field conditions, et al. I, for one though, would like to see him just get in the freakin' way of a runback once in a while to just slow someone up. He crosses their path about 10yds upfield from the returner and thinks he's makin' the play. I am not asking for contact, but geez, can't he just reach out and push someone once in a while?
A kicker who can reach the goal line 80% of the time and hit 85% from 50 yds, 90+% from 35, and in PLUS be a bit of a nuisance on runbacks would be nice. But then, I STILL believe we should be, with our talent, scoring more TD's than FG's every game.

Re: What About Skippy Reed?
The reason that I think that he's been told not to kick deep is that he's followed a pattern that all of the Steeler kickers in the last ten or so years have followed. That's just too much of a coincidence for me. So if we did get a new guy, a replacement, I'd expect him to end up doing the same.

I think he doesn't kick deep because the Steelers go for hang time so ST players can have time to get down field and miss tackles. Unlees the Steelers can find someone with accuracy who can put the ball in the endzone, I think he'll be around next year
