Nope- that's not it.
For the Steelers to have a "win and in" game against Miami, Houston must also lose to the Dolphins this week.
Otherwise week 17 will still be a "win and get help" situation- the "help" being that either Houston has to lose their finale to New England, Baltimore has to lose to Oakland, or Tennessee and Houston both have to finish 9-7.
So also be rooting tomorrow night for the Titans to win!
Re: The Steelers will control their own destiny for the playoffs
Why do we want the Tits to win?? Seems to me we want the Tits out - am I missing something?
Re: The Steelers will control their own destiny for the playoffs
The titans getting to 9-7 doesn't matter, we own the tiebreaker over them.

If the Texans go 9-7, the Titans need to go 9-7.
The Steelers lose out in tiebreakers to the Texans, but the Titans do not.
Since, in any multi-team tie for the wildcard, the first tiebreakers to get broken are ties within division teams, we need the Titans to eliminate the Texans for us.
Then, we can return the favor and eliminate the Titans.

Why do we lose out on the tiebreaker over Texans? Common games?

Well I really don't know the exact specifics, but one less 9-7 teams is one less team we have to worry about. Period. So lets go Dolphins. We can take care of them ourselves.

No- I am not.
Steelers lose out in common games (head-to-head tiebreaker does not apply, and both Pittsburgh and Houston would have 6-6 conference records if they won out).
Houston is 3-1 against Cincy, Oakland, and Tennessee.
The Steelers are 1-3 against those teams.
So now we are huge Dolphins' fans this week.

Would that apply as four common games though? I understand that we each would have played four games against those combo of teams, but it's not really a sample of four common games. I don't know that that would be classified under the four common games, but I could be wrong.

And there would be a fourth common opponent by the end of the year, which would be the Dolphins. If we both were to win out they would be 4-1 against this group of four teams (Bengals, Dolphins, Oakland, Titans) and we would be 2-3.

I forgot to mention the Dolphins- if the Texans and Steelers win out, that will be four common opponents...and the Texans will win, 4-1 to 2-3.
Edit- I see you realized this as I was posting!
Re: The Steelers will control their own destiny for the playoffs
Updated standings on nfl.com have the Texans at #7 in the AFC. So for us to control our own destiny in week 17 we need...
1) To beat the Ravens
2) NE beat Jacksonville
3) Dolphins beat Texans
4) Indy beat NY Jets

5) Eagles also need to beat the Broncos.
We need a multi-team tie for both wildcard slots to have a chance. We can't have Denver at 9-6 and control our own destiny.

Right, I forgot that one.

As everyone reading this thread can discern. The thread libertards who obviously all hail from Moscow west of the Rockies - are enraged that I have brought Danny Boy Rooney - the Obama ass smoocher - to task for his humiliating Obama ass licking on the Super Bowl podium. They can not hide their shrill displeasure as the growing tide of Anti Obamanomics and Anti Obama social engineering now finds its way onto the board, despite their feeble attempts at censure on a freedom of speech, yea verily, a DONT TREAD ON ME AND MY STEELERS board
Since that grotesque display of affection there has been a super bowl hangover of epic proportion. The Steelers have lost their hunger (except for cheeseburgers) and desire and Momlin has possibly lost the ear of most players as they dream of hot tubs and golf courses instead of studying film and practicing technique
The ensuing Lassez Fairre attitude is best exemplified by the palatial living arrangement being enjoyed by Danny Boy Rooney - whose absence - by the way - is NOT the cause of our decline - but rather just another example of "to the victor goes the spoils" type of behavior that is endemic at the Steelers organiztion in 2009 and may I add, the inhabitants of the welfare state in the USA.
So while we endure the obangaesque menstruations of the board libertards, remembering how they used to kiss the teachers ass in high school and now apparently middle school as well, and their haughty pompous use of high brow terminology, and their fruitcake use of sylogisms their condescending brandishment of Euclides and their laughable references to Socrates - we watch with the hope that a new attitude prevails. A hard hat mentality. A take no prisoners mentality. Instead of the gruesome tedious liberal homosexual pissant philosophy that threatens to emasculate our cherished Steelers.
