Thoughts on Ben!
I gave Ben a pass his rookie season because of the way he was thrown into the fire. He was protected that first year and ask just not to make mistakes, which he ended up doing in AFCC game. However, since the start of his second year I have questioned the study habits and work ethic of Ben Roth. It does not seem as though he knows how to read defenses very well, or how to make adjustments to certain blitzes and defenses at the line of scrimmage. He also has not been able to learn to throw the ball away. For every great play he makes by holding the ball, there are 10 negative ones. Usually, these happen at the worst times such as what happened in the Cleveland game on the last drive. Steelers with a 1st and 10, Ben carelessly holds the ball too long and takes a 9 yard sack. I am sick of seeing this, and I don't believe that he puts in alot of study time when it comes to the opponent. I think he belives that he can just go out there and play on instinct alone. What is even more baffling is the fact that the coaching staff refuses to try and correct the problem, instead they just so "you take the good with the bad". This is bullshit, the coaches have to realize that this is detrimental to the team and they must force Ben to start throwing the ball away when nobody is open. I also believe that Ben is a very selfish player and individual (thought you can't tell it from the way he talks). It was him and him alone that wanted Bruce Airhead Arians as the OC, because Big Bad Bruce gives him free reign to do pretty much anything he wants. It was obvious that Ben did not like Wisenhunt and like Arians personnaly. Quite frankly it is not about who Ben likes and doesn't like personnaly, it is about results and Wisenhunt was 10x better of an OC than the Big Dumbass. Time for Ben to put his pride aside for the teams sake.
Re: Thoughts on Ben!
You are an idiot. Coming into this season, Ben had the best winning percentage in his first many years of any QB in history I believe. He won two Super Bowls (that is a career already). He did the above even with one year where he bounced off a windshield and lost several games just because he was injured then but played anyway. He lost a few games in other years because he played with injuries and was not right. When healthy, no one has a better beginning winning percentage in history. Read that again.
Does he hold the ball too long on some plays -- yes. So do Rivers, Brees, Favre, Rodgers and just about anyone you want to name. The only two QBs that might get the ball out no matter what are P. Manning and Brady. And both of them throw a lot into the ground or to people in row 3 when they face good teams. Ben does not like doing that and at times it results in a sack. Do all QBs struggle sometimes reading coverage, sure. Many Colts losses in playoffs to the Pats featured Peyton Manning looking lost. The same can be said about many others.
The above being said, the empty backfield approach is a major problem which is a coordinator issue. Time and again, we go for third and one or third and two with an empty backfield. One or two rushers come unblocked and the play goes nowhere. This has been stupid football for a year and a half. Yet nothing changed.
There are other details as well. But maybe this is enough -- perhaps you want to go back to the days of Maddox, Stewart, Tomczak, O'Donnell, Brister, Woodley, and friends. Yeah, that is what we want. Ben must be overrated. He must have deficiencies. It must be that he is being propped up by the team around him. Let's bring back Cliff Stoudt.
It is very simple: when you are a QB, you are dependent on others blocking to be effective. See Manning, Peyton Divisional Playoff Against Steelers during first recent Steeler Super Bowl run. Maybe Manning held the ball too long there? Maybe Brady held the ball too long on the "tuck" rule play and did not read the defense right.
Maybe you have no clue and should give up analysis.

You can drink the cool-aid and be a homer if you want to. Sport teams needs fans like your self.
You know, the ones that think every player on their team is greatand have the general attitude of "oh well you can't win the all". Thats up to you. However I wouldn't be calling anyone else an idiot. The FACT of the matter is Big Ben doesn't play like a 100 million (did you hear that figure)
franchise QB a lot of the time.Throughout his career he has relied on his defense to pull games out for him. He is not an elite QB in this league. What he needs to do is get his head out of his ass and work harder at his craft. Ben, along with most of his teammates got the superbowl hangover this year and don't care. Why should the fans?

Ben's not an elite QB? How many superbowl wins does it take?

"Ben's not an elite QB? How many superbowl wins does it take?"
Well for one not having the lowest QB rating for a game in SB history. If Ben was "elite" the steelers would be sitting on 9 to 10 wins now fighting it out for the division championship. Instead, all that is left for steeler fans now is to decide who to root for in the playoffs.

Re: Thoughts on Ben!
I think Ben is great. He's the reason I'm way more involved in the Steelers than when they had Kordell, O'Donnell, etc. You just knew in the back of your mind that we'd never make it all the way with those guys under center. Now with Ben, one feels like we have a chance, all the time.
That said, his style of play leads to frequent injury, and as he ages, he won't be able to recover as quickly, etc., and I think his career could very well be shortened as a result. I think somebody needs to teach him how to throw the ball away more often and draw on his play-making ability less often, when it will be more of a surprise, and thus likely more effective.
Bradshaw was a playmaker, a gunslinger. The parallels with him and Ben are many; he could take a hit, and did, many a time. Yet as he aged he learned to quit calling QB draws (got himself injured in '73) and throw the ball away when the situation warranted. Maybe he's the guy to do it, he convinced Ben to park the Hayabusa.

Re: Thoughts on Ben!
Ben is a proven winner. Lately he hasn't played the greatest but nobody on that team is. Sure he holds the ball too long at times but usually he makes it work for him and does whatever it takes to make a play and move the ball. Please people don't be crazy. Ben is the best QB we ever had since Bradshaw. All he does is find ways to win games. Look what he's done in college and he already has two rings in the pros. We just need to unload BA and get back to Steelers football with a more balanced ball control offense. If we concentrated more on seriously building a solid OL and give Ben time, there wouldn't be a team in the league that could beat us. Ben is an elite QB, or if not yet will certainly be, don't kid yourself.

Re: Thoughts on Ben!
Here's the problem w/ Ben: his hero is Elway, who was known as Captain Comeback. Ben refuses to cut the heart out of teams in the first half - ever wonder why Manning & Brady slice up teams like Cleve, Oakland, etc & go to the half w/ like 21-3 leads?? Ben luvs the recognition of being a hero - that's it. Well, this yr it has bit him in the a$$.

Re: Thoughts on Ben!
Ben needs to drop 10-15 lbs, get himself a fullback that can block and an offense where he doesn't use a calendar waiting to get guys open. Our guys get open but by then, Ben is on his ass or "in the arms of another man". Sometimes, though, Ben is indecisive.
OC is a major league douchebag, we ALL know. Ben's gifts are improvising as play begins to breadkdown. Lighter load gets him outside and moving. Ass Arians thinks 5 more cheeseburgers will make him a little harder to be taken down by 2 nose tackles, 3 defensive ends and a safety coming in for a check-up. Hence, we see Ben waiting for a bus with no friends. Gee, Bruce, think jus' once in a while, you might TRY a fullback. I don't know, it seems to help slow the enemy or provide a dump off when it really gets crowded back there

Re: Thoughts on Ben!
Oh no way! Great draft pick.
Piss-poor coaching other than Whiz or Marlarkey as an OC.
I put this at the feet of The Blood Clot. I'm not sure Ken Anderson is much help either though.
Good coaching gets him to toss the ball out-of-bounds and live for another play. Good coaching gets him to read quicker, be more decisive. A better offensive scheme USES his damn gifts. You know, like his first 2 or 3 years of spectacular comebacks and creative opportunities.
THIS fiasco is Arians and Anderson. MT will THEN take ownership if these 2 aren't faxing resumes come January.

Re: Thoughts on Ben!
I agree with that totally. And I get frustrated too with Ben sometimes holding on a bit too long, but for the most part he does make it work for him and plays his heart out to make a play.
Hines/Holmes should have kept their mouths shut instead of voicing their opinion on him not playing in the Ravens game. Ben more then anybody hates to miss games and plays his ass off every play, I blame them for getting the team chemistry off track. Great goin boys. The head coach usually gets things back on track, hasn't happened. This week Im hoping we look and play like a very good team that we are.

Are you freaking kidding me? Have you watched any games this season?! Sure, Ben's the reason we've been losing. If you're so in love with "elite" QBs, I encourage you to go drool over the Colts or the Patriots.
