sounds like he is in shape

has a good head on his shoulders

already plays in the 3-4

looks like he would be able to play anywhere on the line

depends on where we draft at if a shutdown corner is available then i would take him first

I'm fine with any of these:

Trading up to steal Eric Berry, S (Tennesse)
Trading up to steal Russell Okung, OT (Oklahoma State)
Rolando McClain, ILB (Alabama)
Terrence Cody, NT (Alabama)
Dan Williams, NT (Tennessee)
Earl Thomas, FS (Texas)

I am assuming that Casey Hampton will be gone via FA. God love Aaron Smith, but he ain't no spring chicken. Keisel was locked up last year and Hood is a #1 draft pick. Obviously both figure into the Steelers' 2010 plans. I'm thinking Keisel - Cody - Smith with Hood fighting for and eventually winning one of the DE spots.

This also assumes that we stick with the 3-4. Frankly, with our personnel I just don't see us transitioning to a 4-3, though I guess it would be possible.

I don't see the Steelers going anywhere but NT or CB in 2010. And from what I've seen this year's CB crop doesn't really have a true "shut-down" corner. The closest (I suppose) would be Joe Haden out of Florida IF he declares. I'd be OK with him or maybe even Patrick Robinson out of Florida State.

BUT. Football teams (especially defensive units) are built from the line out. Chris Hoke has been a great back-up, but he is old and no way capable of anchoring our 3-4 defense. And we drafted two corners last year that both made the squad and have yet to get much playing time. If we go CB in Round 2 or 3, I think we get a quality player who could compete with Gay, Lewis and Burnett. Cody seems so obvious to me that I'm sure the Steelers won't take him......

I see us letting Batch, Parker, Reed, & Hampton leave without even taking their agents' calls. Of these, Hampton is easily the biggest hole to fill. I think the only UFA starter we will even make a serious effort to re-sign will be Clark. Carter and Townsend will get signed as back-ups (nickel/dimes) as long as they come cheap (and I expect they will.)

I think they could transition fairly easily. Move Hood or Smith inside in the 4-3 and the other plays end. Lose Farrior and move Woodley inside with Silverback and Timmons on the outside. The biggest problem as I stated in another post is age and depth. I think this team already played a lot of cover 2 out of the 3-4 alignment anyway. I'm not advocating for this. Just saying it's not far fetched.

Wishful thinking. But think about it.....

I don't see him lasting that long. I DO see Navarro Bowman dropping to us IF no better DB/safety is available. I want 1 more yr from Hampton to "save" that pick. We need Farrior out of there. I want Fox and A. Harrison on the field as much as possible NOW to see if they can handle to load.

If they can cut it, (I love Fox), then grab a NT or quality DB. If they aren't every down players, grab Bowman. If Bowman's gone, GRAB Josh Hull or Sean Lee in Rd 2.

Silverback (older but wiser), Timmons (full yr in scheme), Woodley (20 lbs lighter?), and ABF (anyone BUT Farrior) makes a formidible LB corps that can back up Hoke and Big Snack.

Clark, Ike and Gay DO need addressed as well.
Personally, I think the line is improving but Hartwig not the answer. maybe Rd 3 - 6 address these needs.
