ANYONE REMEMBER THE 1979-1980 RAMS?

Postby NJSteel27 » Mon Dec 14, 2009 8:53 am

The 1979-1980 RAMS......Like the title states........anyone remember them and their QB Vince Ferragamo??

The last time the Steelers won the 2nd leg of their 2nd back-to-back Super Bowl titles, their opponenet was the LA RAMS !

The RAMS that year were 9-6 (I believe)..........and they represented the NFC in the Bowl.
In fact, if it wasn't for a few late 4th quarter John Stallworth TD's, they actually were WINNING the entire game!

It happened before..............why not again??

Lets hope all the Steeler-favorable playoff scenarios actually occur and the Steelers take some extra Geritol into the playoffs and get to the big one!

Ferragamo was a one season wonder. Starting QB Pat Haden was injured mid-season. Jack Youngblood played a good portion of the year with a broken bone in his leg. They had Lawrence McCutcheon and Wendell Bryant in the backfield. Jackie Slater was at a Tackle. Jim Youngblood who played at Tennessee Tech was at a linebacker. Oh yeah and Ray Malavasi was HC. They beat Doug Williams &Tampa in the NFC championship only because Ricky Bell from USC got injured early in the game. Not sure but Billy Waddy and Harold Jackson may have been at the WR positions. Thats the best I can do.

Yes, I remember them and the game.

One difference......

The 1979 / 80 Rams played the 1979 / 80 Steelers. Shit, even the back-ups (Jim Smith, Larry Anderson, etc.) are better than this bunch of clowns that call themselves the startes for the 2009 / 10 Stillers.

Where's Mel Blount and Donnie Shell when you need them? Hell, stick Lambert in for Farrior -- give him a six pack first, he's older now -- then stick him in for Farrior.

hey, LambertoCincoOcho, GREAT NAME ! (But to be totally correct, it would be LambertoCinquentiocho).

perhaps everyone lost the reason for this post.
I was trying to juxtapose the 9-6 record of the '79-'80 Rams (the last super bowl team with such a dismal record) with that of the Steelers this year (9-7, if they win their remaining games).

I can still remember that year, too. In fact, the Steelers played the Rams that year during the regular season and (I believe the Rams beat them). But, more importantly, I can remember the "experts" saying how the Rams didn't deserve to be in the championship game with such a low record. Yet, no one told the Rams to "go home" and not show up. They played nearly well enough for 3+ quarters to beat the Steelers, but thankfully John Stallworth made the slot-hook-and-go play a household word!

I love how history has a chance to repeat itself.
Wouldn't we all like to see that this year!

Yes they did. I was at the game. Monday night game in the Coliseum. Best seats I could get. We had 3 tickets on the 50. 2 rows from the top and 1 seat was behind a pole from the overhang. lol

Yeah, and despite their lowly record, they still made it to the Super Bowl !
Which is why I posted this to begin with.
If certain things happen in the Steelers favor (and they win out, which, given their history this year, isn't necessarily something to bet the farm on) they could have a shot!

The Steelers played the Rams in the regular season in 1978- the season BEFORE they played them in the Super Bowl.

The Rams did win 10-7, though- that was the second of the Steelers' 2 losses in 1978 (the other one being to Houston).
