I've noticed a sudden loss of passion this season, which IMO was a strange yet glaring sign. (I've stated my speculations of why this may have happened in another thread.) It was like even when we won, something was not the same about this team. It seems like the players had become indifferent or something.
Whenever Tom Brady loses, it's always someone else's fault.

Joey Porter was a vocal leader. Porter was out on the front lines challenging people, teammates and opponents alike. He would take a stand (literally if you know the Joey Porter rule) and force you to pick a side. Like him or hate him as a fan, players respected him. He was one of Cowher's finest. Billy was all about yelling, screaming and firing up the team, but a coach can only do so much. Players still play the game, and that is where a guy like Porter was so valuable. When he was on the field, motivation wasn't an issue.
When Tomlin was hired on, Porter was let go shortly after. I think that was because Tomlin was taking on the role as vocal leader, albeit more of a soft spoken silver tongue guy. Mike has done a great job, and up until now the need for a "cocky, your with me or against me" guy hasn't been needed. James Harrison, Aaron Smith, Troy Polamalu, are soft spoken superstars. Typically Ike Taylor is quite as a mouse, but for the receiver he is shutting down. If anyone is going to be a Joey Porter-like trash talker I think it will be LaMarr Woodley. Throughout the rest of this season and on into next, expect to see him contesting opponents ability and desire to run the football.

Re: who is our joey porter
Steelers do lack an emotional leader. Porter's energy had its value. I don't think the Steelers need trash talking but they need a solid player to get in the faces of his teammates and demand they get focused and physical. I think they miss Cowher's in-game fire (not there in 2006, of course). Now, I don't know who that would be. Farrior's not a good enough player anymore to be it, and Harrison, Smith, and Polamalu are too quiet. Tomlin looks overwhelmed on the sidelides in adverse situations. Somebody needs to step up soon and certainly by next year.
Somebody needs to tell this team that they are the Pittsburgh Steelers!

Great Post! Where is our Peezy? I think Ryan Clark has been trying to do that but it doesnt work when you are not very good. The type you are talking about has to have that look. You know, the Clint Eastwood type of look with a hint of thug
That was Joey and you know who that was before him? It was Lee Flowers! LOL!! Flowers used to say some shit I tell ya. But really, there was NOONE like Porter. He was (and still is) a hoot
I agree that The Woodman is the next Joey. Watch big Lamar. I think he just may get angry about all of this

Being a vocal ass hole doesn't make you a leader.
