Stillers sign 2, cut Woods and Ratliff
In an attempt to shore up their kickoff coverage unit, the Steelers have signed linebacker Rocky Boiman and safety Corey Ivy.
To make room for those players on the 53-man roster, the Steelers released cornerback Keiwan Ratliff and linebacker Donovan Woods.
Probably won't do a huge world of difference, but this is a start. Boiman, you may recall, had the gargantuan game for the Titans in a win over the Stillers in 2003 or 04.
Next step....work on TECHNIQUE, and look at adding Hood as a wedgebuster and another defender in place of Logan, who has done nothing recently in coverage.

The scary part of this is it may just be shots in the dark. On something like special teams it is harder to fix a problem or should i say nail down the exact cause of the problem than on offense or defense.
special teams is not as cut and dry as dropping a pass or overthrowing a receiver. It is more of a group effort philosophy than just beating or covering "your" man on O or D.

There is physics then technique then desire
1) the KO must be high and long
2) there must be a gunner that gets to the return man coincidal with the ball
3) there must be wedge buster who also can get there quickly
4) the remaining KO team must get there pronto
5) everyone must hold their lanes
6) everyone must shed their blockers instead of titty jousting
7) FUCKING TACKLE
That my friends are 7 good planks upon which the KO team can base their rebuild. WTF is Legashesky doing?

Im encouraged with the addition of Boiman. He's played some good football and has a ton of experience over Woods. Can Sepulveda kick off?

I have been baffled at the reluctance to try Sepulveda on the kick-off??? What's the deal or have they tried this in the preseason? Our kick-off coverage currently consists of 10 men and a boy (Reed), but Sepulveda could make it a full 11.

sepulveda is not a kicker. he is a punter. That sounds simplistic but it is true. completely different position. just because you can drop punt a ball and place hold doesnt mean you can do kickoffs and extra points.
Basically they wont bench reed and that is what you are asking for. they would instead go find an actual trained kicker that did the job in college and has years of practice at it.
sure sepulveda might get it right a few times but what happens when he flubs once and costs us the game?
You cant take a pro athlete and put him in another position where is not a pro athlete and expect no mistakes.

How about Sepulveda on the coverage team to replace, hmmm, let's say Logan? Dude is an animal when it comes to tackling. I know it won't happen because we can't afford him to get hurt, i.e the abortion that was last year's punt game. Also, I didn't imply Sepulveda to kick FG's, just boot the kick-off. Do you know if he has ever given that a shot?

Re: Stillers sign 2, cut Woods and Ratliff
sepulveda used to be a linebacker thus his skill and anger when applied to tackling. he is a beast. Dont know if he ever tried kickoffs. I personally dont want to risk him on kickoff coverage. he already helps out on punt coverage as an extra tackler already. He has laid the wood on several punt returners deep in their own territory so he is not only a beast but pretty frigging fast too.
logan has some misses but logans speed has gotten him some good tackles on kick returns also.
Funny thing is on the K.C. kickoff return by jamaal charles in the first play of the game the first person to miss the tackle was Ike Taylor #24! So it was actually a starter that blew it first. Then I think it was Andre Frazier that missed a tackle right after.

Time for Steel Dirt to update Ben's No Huddle vs. Arians Air Twaddle
We have great potential for balance attack with soooooo many weapons, with Wallace being a great addition and now Mendy getting his chance. We run for 7 yds, pass for 2 then go offside or hold. Why not work the run, while it works and throw in the screens (MeMo?) then move the chains with Miller, Ward when they need moved. When pass game clicks, ride that (playoffs of '05!) and then wear them out with run later. I just think Arians is fly by seat of his pants type.
Anyone think he'd be picked up if he was let go?

He would be a perfect fit with the Raiders as they are notorious for horrible decision-making.

We're screwed from the start, since we don't have your plank #1.

I'm not so sure Se-puntveda couldn't do kick-offs. I agree that he has no business kicking FG's, but kicking off is not to complicated.
"So he flubs one and we lose the game?" Given the recent coverage unit history, flubbing a kick might not be all that bad. Consider also that Reed has just about the weakest kick power in the league on KO's.
Jeff Reed is a kicker and not a football player. I think Sepulveda has a some football player in him. He reminds me of Darren Bennett. The punter for the Chargers a decade or so ago who had a rugby background. Tougher guys than your avg. NFL kicking specialist. My confidence is much higher in Dan as the last line of defense than Jeff...But who knows, maybe these new guys can succeed where the others have come up short.

and we dont have 2-7 either
Re: Stillers sign 2, cut Woods and Ratliff
Maybe Anthony Madison would help. Oh, that's right, we had him and he was a captain of the special teams but got cut. Nice thinking by the club. You reap what you sow. It is that simple.

Tomlin needs to fire Ligahesky yesterday. The guy is a complete failure as a ST coach.
Re: Stillers sign 2, cut Woods and Ratliff
I still think they need to put some starters out there too. Some of these second teamers are just lazy as hell. Another thing they have to do is get a kicker who can consistently kick them deep. Reed doesn't even hit the 5 yard line on some of his kicks. Deeper kicks, and experience would be another step in the right direction.
Bruce Arians: Proudly carried the Honor of Short Bus All-Star 2007-2011. Good job, and glad you're gone Dumbfuck!!!!!
