Time to get back to Steeler Football

Postby Steeldrake » Tue Nov 24, 2009 12:11 am

Pass happy Arians and Ben's inflated ego, along with Tomlin's meek acquiescence have ruined this offense. Yes, it's flashy. Yes, we're seeing some points from time to time. BUT, it's causing unnecessary turnovers, it's not controlling the clock - giving opposing offenses many more chances than they deserve, and it's making us a laughingstock in the red zone.
It's time to start controlling ballgames in the second half and putting the hammer down with the running game and some intelligent playcalling.

Ben's stat-line needs to read: 16-24 223yds 2td 0int
Instead we get 32-42 400yds 3td 2 int

The first stat line = winning a ball game.
The second stat line = OT loss to a 2-7 team

Ben needs to get back to "managing the game" like he did before he and Arians decided he could win games single-handedly with the passing game. How did that work out for Dan Fouts? Or Marino in Miami? You end up with a lot of yards passing, a couple of interceptions, an exhausted defense in the 4th quarter, and a lot of 32-28 losses. Tough, tough to win Super Bowls that way.

Bruce Arians offensive philosophy is mystifying to me. He should be a part-time, third-and-long offensive coordinator. I like his third and long packages. The bunched formations and such seem to be fairly effective - this is when he and Ben are at their best. First and second down? Or (gasp) third and SHORT? Complete blithering idiocy. I'll never forget the first shotgun formation empty backfield on 3rd and 2 I ever saw (an Arians staple). I couldn't believe it. I thought it HAD to be a one time thing (obviously not). Why would you not entertain the defense with the threat of a run? Besides that, we're the goddamn Steelers, we should at least THREATEN to run the ball on third and 2!

Our offense has become pussified, finesse, and incoherent. It's inconsistent and by not controlling the ball more, puts too much pressure on our defense in the second half.

We finally have a big, effective running back again.

We should be pounding the ball, keeping defenses off balance, gashing them with the pass, controlling clock. Instead Steeler football has turned into a circus act of wildly flinging the pigskin all over the park hoping that some how you'll outscore the other guy's offense. It didn't work for Fouts and Marino.... I guess Arians and Tomlin think that it will work for Ben.

What ever happened to establishing the running game?
What ever happened to play action passes?
What ever happened to calling one running play after another when you're ripping off chunks of yardage (overtime in K.C. anyone?)
What ever happened to an occasional trick play? One of the redeeming qualities of the Cowher era was the EFFECTIVE and timely use of trick plays. Did Whisenhunt take that portion of the playbook with him when he left town?

Control the line of scrimmage, punish the defense, keep them off-balance and guessing, gash them for chunks of yardage through the air, control the clock, pound the football in the 4th quarter and the red-zone, and score touchdowns.

It's not fucking complicated!

Should Bruce Arians be replaced? Yes. But more importantly the offensive PHILOSOPHY needs to come from Tomlin. He needs to lay down the law and decide whether we're going to continue to be a finesse team on offense, or get back to basics and play STEELER FOOTBALL.

what you said is all true but as long as asshole Arians still on the payroll its not going to happen

there isnt anyone in the NFL that will pick this asshole up off us we need to fire him out right and until we do just expect this shit to keep going on

Guys this StillerFootball talk doesn't mean jack-shit anymore. When you throw redzone INT's, give up multiple KR's for TD's, & you run your slowest RB on a pitch on 3rd & 3 in OT, you got big problems. I've said before & I will say it again, the worst thing that happened to this team was the dominant 2nd half vs Denver. They believed everything the media said about them & now they're playing like they just have to show up.
