Almost as dumb as the 3 and 2 on OT was the first down play -- a delayed flat pass by the second string QB who just came in the game with a cold arm. That was close to being pick six.

But, yes, sending your slowest back out on a deep pitch with only 2 yards to gain -- inexcusable!

My first thought on the handoff was that it was going to be a halfback pass that Moore quickly decided against. Any one know if this was the call?

At least a halfback pass call would show some thinking. I don't agree with one of the posts above mine - that the flat pass was a bad call because of a cold arm - Charlie connected downfield before that.

But never mind that - I disagree with the 3rd and 2 call of Arians more. I take a Hines Ward curl in or out on 3rd and two any day. WTF.

I think Moore strung it wider than it was supposed to go, and got chased down backside. It had a slight chance of working if Moore cuts to the hole that I think he was supposed to cut to.

But it was a bad play at any rate. It was four-down territory. A perimeter play in that situation was stupid.

And there was no reason to take mendy out of the game. Give him the ball and let him take it straight up the middle- twice if need be.

Even if he doesn't make it, the FG is still an option (albeit not a pleasant one).

It was NOT a called halfback option, but as soon as the play started, I was hoping it was. Tomlin admitted they were trying for the sweep there, that's it.

I'm not a football expert, but when you are on the very cusp of field goal range, should you run a play the has a very low, if not the lowest percentage of not losing yardage? If Ben was in there, I would even consider a QB sneak quick snap, but with Batch, not a great option to get the first down. So you go to the next lowest percentage play, which would be Mendy up the middle...no stutter step....just hit the damn hole and don't lose yardage. It's not like we were facing the Ravens or Minnesota's run defense. Worst case, no gain to one yard gain, 51-52 yard FG attempt which is NO problem for Reed distance-wise. If getting the first down was the only goal, then OK run the sweep, but when are you the absolute limit of your kickers range (at least what they were willing to let him kick), then don't fuk around with some horizontal play with a slow RB that requires perfect blocking.... SO frustrating!

That play was the nadir of Arians play calling career. It broke every FUCKING RULE OF OFFENSIVE PLAY CALLING COMMON SENSE AND PROTOCOL
