playing down to competition?
I believe the Steelers do play down to their competition. If you look at their 3 losses and some of their wins against Detroit and Cleveland, they have played half ass. As usual, the Steelers slopped and slatherthed their way throughout the game letting Cincy, with no real playmakers, hang around. Ben played like dog shit all day, the receivers played poorly, the o-line stunk the field up (none more so than the 4th and 10 play at the end of the game, where a nose tackle went right between two offensive lineman). The defense dropped 3 turnovers. Not to be out done in the stench department, the special teams chipped in with another horse shit performance, allowing another td return for a touchdown, and piss poor blocking on punt and kick returns. Jeff Reed (the soon to be ex-Steelers when the season is over) continued his shitty play with a pussy tackle attempt on the bungal return when he literally ran passed the return man, pathetic. I'm getting sick and tired of Tomlin sticking with Arians, I have no earthly idea why this happens? There is no possible way I can buy this team beating Minnesota, Denver on the road and then losing to Cincy at home. No Cedric Benson mostly, no deep ball threat, Rivers and Roy Williams out, there is no excuse for losing this game.

Well said, that about sums it up for me.
Re: playing down to competition?
The reason they lost is simple:
They simply wanted it less than Cincy did. That sums up and explains your statement very succinctly. Sometimes, the best team does not win. That happened today.

Re: playing down to competition?
i dont know if we played down to competition so much as just getting beat outright. as much as i hate to say it, for the most part they dominated the line of scrimmage and out-physicaled us. they are just the better team this year, period
sure we can say a buncha but's and if's, but the bottom line is they're 2 for 2 against us.
with that said, FIRE ARIANS!

I don't buy the "they wanted it less" excuse in professional sports. I don't think there is a guy on the field who on each play wasn't trying to perform to the best of their capability. It's their job and their performance is their livelihood/ paycheck. I would agree that players lack of desire may affect their preparation during the week, mainly on losing teams (such as a KC or Oakland), but on gamedays I find it hard to believe that any player isn't attempting to perform to their maximum potential.

You believe this even for the players that have a nice fat, guaranteed paycheck for the next 3+ years?? I don't know how many years we still have him, but Farrior comes to mind as particularly lack-luster. I think he got it up for one game this entire season? If our team was always giving 100%, they'd be playing like Harrison has.

I gotta respectfully disagree. I think Marvin Lewis had his troops jacked up and ready to go. They played with much more intensity than we did. At the end, we clearly got frustrated....as James Harrison got the stupid 15 yd penalty late in the 4th quarter. I knew it was only a matter of time that our frustration would get the better of us, as Kemo was pushing Bungles on a couple of ocassions when they play was over but didnt get a flag.
Ben played like dogshit, Max Starks looked fat & lazy today....I could go on and on. The Black & Gold was on the field today, but it definitely seemed like they wanted to be somewhere else.

The idea of playing down to competition is an interesting one.
When you are the defending champ though, you are going to get everyone's best shot.

I couldn't agree with you more. Alot of fans just see them as the Bungals, but they are a good team this year. I hope we get another chance to face them in the playoffs.

Re: playing down to competition?
There are a couple of different points here. First I agree that the steelers seem to play down to the competition. When was the last time you saw the steelers really blow out a poor team? The second point is that the Bungles are not the laughing stock of the NFl this year (even though a doinked fg and missed extra point show they still have that potential). And finally, IF the Steelers brought thier "A" game against the Bungle "A" game there is no dought in my mind who would win that contest.

Cincy THUMPED us. Period. We'll get them in the playoffs though. WE HAD A BAD DAY, THAT IS ALL Hmmm fat fingered the caps lock
Re: playing down to competition?
As big as this game was I have a hard time believing that either team wanted to win more than the other. One team may have been better prepared than the other, but as far as from 1-4:15 on Sunday, I don't think that either team wanted to win more than the other. I understand why people would disagree, but I think it is a much overused expression by fans in sports that one team "wanted it more" than the other.
Re: playing down to competition?
bengal fan here to put my 2 c here, lets see, 1st game pitt out plays cin for 3 quarters, but cin outplays pitt in the 4th quarter and wins, now they are both tied for 1st place and your saying even tho pitt lost the 2nd game. its because pitt played down to the cometition.
