Mendy thought he was on the goal line when he jumped

Postby toomuchmerrilhoge » Sun Oct 25, 2009 8:04 pm

After watching the replay several times, and seeing Mendy's confused face after the play, I'm absolutely convinced that Rashard thought he was on the goal line when he jumped. Of course, he was actually on the 5 yd line, which shows his general inability to focus in critical situations. How can you not know WHERE you are on the field when a play starts? I want him to get more carries every game, but he's such an airhead, it seems like once again this year (at least on offense), it's all about Ben.

Yep. I predicated everyone would jump off his wagon once he fumbled.

That being said, FWP is TOTALLY ineffective. I don't know if it is his toe, age, attitude or what. Fact is, Mendy is more effective than FWP right now.

Hard to believe, but even Franco Harris fumbled at inappropriate times and, believe it or not, Bradshaw threw interceptions (sometimes more than one per game!).

He was great today, with one obvious exception. You can't give up on the guy. Don't be idiots.

In fact, he should have been in on the last drive.

Ah, I see now. You are one of those. Perhaps you had another handle on this board?

Look,
there is definite precedent for Mendys fumblitis as evidenced by his benching immediately thereafter. And his inability to properly prepare earned him a game off two weeks ago, so the poster is totally correct in all of his criticisms

That said I still would have gone with Mendy for one more drive because I didnt trust our defensive secondary, but I understand why Tomlin benched him

Whats the matter with your brain?

I agree with PG here. Mendy has had his issues with fumble-itis. He did also earn a trip to the bench for his practice and preparation. So I think he may have been jumping across the 5-yard "goal line" as was suggested.

I was not ready to kill Bettis when he fumbled on the goal line against the Colts our Super Bowl year under Cowher. The ONLY reason we won that game is that Manning didn't have enough time to get any closer for the FG.... Bettis was given the chance to redeem himself, although he earned that right with his consistency over the years...

Anyway, I also would have put the jumper back in. He was running well and mistakes happen. Even Ward has dropped some easy ones. I would also remind you all that many thought Polamalu was a bust after his first year. I believe Mendy is just one of those guys right now whose potential outweighs his performance. I remember Plaxico spiking the ball after a big catch, only to realize that he was not downed by contact. He did not get yanked, but I am sure he had some Cowher Spittle on his face...

Bottom line: I didn't feel as comfortable about our chances after seeing moore in the backfield in the 4th quarter. I would have put him back in and given him the chance to redeem himself.

Random thought: roethlisberger's early career. When he would throw an interception, Cowher would call for 47 running plays in a row... They could have put Mendy back in because Arians would have called 47 pass plays in a row. :)

I never had another handle.

Mendy's fumbling is def. a big problem. But we're ultimately going to live and die by him. He ran great all day except one moronic play. We needed first downs. We need his confidence to go anywhere.

If you guys ran the team, Woodley would have been benched after sucking for a few games.

I just watched replay a couple more times and definitely agree that he thought he was at the goal line. He leapt over the 5 exactly like he was trying to cross the line. No other explanation for why someone would do that. It is troubling.

Ill get bashed for this but fuck the bengals. Hes still a rookie- yes i KNOW he should have concentrated in the time he was hurt and his mentality isnt all there but he is our running game with Mo. He will be a good back, Mills "Purple Jesus lets suck his dick" Peterson had fumbling issues when he started too. You people will ALWAYS have something to bitch about.

Yes that play was fucking stupid. No argument from me AT ALL.

They should have gone back to Mendy. There certainly seems to be more to the story between the coaching staff and Mendy than meets the eye. It almost seems that they hate this guy even being on the squad and can't wait to find a reason to bench him.

Yeah, something is up here. Is Mendy on ST's? I say that he is hale enough to do ST work. After a fumble Tomlin should immediately get in his grill and say

"Mendy, you are on the next KO team. If you want back in the game I need to see you be the first man down the field"

This is dumb. The guy is a s tarting TBack, with potential to be a major star.

Running backs fumble; all running backs.
Mendy is the best running back on this team. Don't get me wrong, I love Mewelde but Mendy has the skills inside, outside and out of the backfield as a receiver. He needs to be on the field more. He will develop but there are always going to be growing pains.

The Steelers go with Moore when we are backed against our goal-line and punt returns late in the game when against our goal line.

I am not sure if Mendy really got benched or we were in a "situational" situation. Obviously the Steelers don't feel safe with Mendenhall carrying the football nonetheless.

I must admit that I hold my breath everytime he runs because I am waiting to see that ball squirt out. Watching any d-player approach hime from behind is an outright scare. Either he holds the ball correctly or he sits on the bench in my opinion. I am sure the Steelers coaches are telling this guy not to carry the football like that. The dude won't listen. It is like asking a tackle to block to his left but he always blocks to his right. You would sit him.

I'm not off the wagon yet :subngtowl:

With the exception of that fumble he looked solid against one of the best rush D's in the league. I still think he should have gotten more carries

I remember similar debates back in '06 about Ben's effectiveness and his propensity to throw INT's.

Consider me still riding the wagon. I think Tomlin was too quick to yank him for the whole game - 6.9 yards per carry.

He should have gotten his @$$ handed to him on the sideline and then put back in... He was moving the chains for us and Moore is primarily a receiving threat.

Leaping over the line for the TD when you're still on the 5-yard line is a boner on the same order as spiking the ball when you're not yet down.

Look where Plax is now.
