Arians on the Wildcat Offense

Postby SteelCityFan » Mon Aug 03, 2009 2:45 pm

Think there is a chance we’ll see third-year quarterback Dennis Dixon running the Wildcat this season? Think again. Here is what offensive coordinator Bruce Arians had to say on the subject today: “I’m not a Wildcat guy, and Dennis would get broken in half.” As talented and athletic as he is, Dixon is still a work-in-progress and has made some poor decisions in 11-on-11 drills. It is early but Dixon is a longshot at best to overtake veteran Charlie Batch for the No. 2 spot behind Ben Roethlisberger.

God forbid we get a guy with the athletic ability of a Dixon on to the field. I'm not buying that he would get broke in half. It sounds like Arians doesn't want to put in the time to develop the Wildcat. If we had Dixon, Parker and Holmes lined up in the Wildcat opposing teams would shit themselves.

How many teams running the wildcat won the super bowl last year?

What we are doing works when Ben is running the show (not Arians).

dixon would get broken in half? that doesn't sound good considering our o-line allows for a lot of breaking-in-half-chances

I would still like to see the Wildcat occassionally just to mix things up. Heinz could run it as well as Mendenhall. The Steelers have the weapons for it. Plus Arians take on it (the fact he doesnt like it) tells me it probably would work. He needs to open his mind.

Teams with great quarterback play have no need to resort to the wildcat. Only teams with poor to average quarterback play find need for this gimmick. Have you seen the Colts or Pats use it?

The Wildcat w/o a passing threat is simply another running formation. Lest people forget, we kind of invented the true concept ourselves w/Corky as "Slash". He coud run, catch or throw. I believe Dixon is capable of the same Slash role but am equally sure that BA lacks the imagination to utilize his skills.

I actually think Hines would be well-suited for that position. He would not be broken in half.

No wildcat is a GOOD thing for the Steelers. The only teams that run it are teams where the QB sucks.

I know we have a great QB. My lack of confidence is not in him. It is the running game. The Wildcat works for the running game. Miami is #2 in rushing yards. All I am saying is use it like the No Huddle. Utilize it to throw of defenses. Use it when we struggle to run the ball (and we will again). I am saying just try it occassionally.

No, Hines would be fine with it, but I don't think Wildcat is the answer. My two cents.

Two more cents...Hines Ward for President!

smartest thing arians did was to say no to the wildcat

he still sucks, though.

seriously what the hell, mendy is averaging 7 yards a carry and you just give him the ball 10 times? running game is working so you abandon it? no fucking wonder why we only scored 1 offensive TD
