Pussy play

Postby Pommah » Mon Oct 05, 2009 9:20 pm

That punt return where they held up Logan - a guy literally grabbing his jersey from the back, not to tackle, but to keep upright - just to strip the ball, to me that's pussy play, the kind of thing resorted to by teams that can't win the real way.

Rules change to adapt to the game. Fumbling the ball forward on purpose has been outlawed. So should holding guys up just so you can strip the ball. The ref could have blown the whistle on that play for lack of forward progress.

On another point, too many of our defenders whiffed on tackles where they were attempting to strip the ball instead of bringing the guy down. To me a strip tackle is just that - you strip and tackle at the same time.

Just how is a referee to determine if they are holding someone up to strip the ball? Bad idea. The more things we leave to the judgment of the referees the worse things get. Logan should know enough (or he does now) to just go down in that situation or call a fair catch. To me he still looks pretty shaky fielding punts. I don't expect him to last the year unless he get better at it.

Refs should have stopped play for lack of forward progress.

The wistle should have been blown. Having to go the replay and find out he was not technically down because his knee was on another player is pure pull. :suahhbs:

The ref SHOULD have blown the play dead because his forward progress was stopped.

This is another example of the NFL paying lip service to protecting the players while allowing this BS to occur. I hate to agree with Ray Lewis, but it is embarrassing. The Rules protecting players and especially QBs are enforced in direct proportion to how valuable you are to the league in terms of marketability. Hence, why it is illegal to sniff Tom Brady or Peyton Manning's jersey, and why Byron Leftwich will have problems walking later in life.

And Yes... the Refs are relying on Replay far too much. They are afraid to do what they know they should because they might have another Ed Hochuli incident.

Logan should've got his ass down, plain & simple. As far as stripping the ball being bush-league, tell that to Harrison or Woodley. They go for the strip everytime. I'm just glad this play didn't cost them the gm. I'm sure the spec tm coaches will be in his ear this wk.

Forward progress wasn't done yet. I mean, he only had 5 guys hanging on to him and I was waiting to see his Bettis impression with his 5'6" 180 pound frame.

imo nobody should be going for a block on a punt....what are the odds of a block anyway. we finally have an explosive returner so everyone should block their asses off so logan can finally break one when it counts :x

saying that holding a guy up then stripping him should be a penalty is a pussy suggestion. Take yer skirt off pommah. yeah maybe the stripes shoulda called that one dead, but Logan shoulda got his ass down or held on to the damn ball. there are way way too many rules anyways

right: saying that holding a guy up then stripping him should be a penalty is a pussy suggestion.

wrong: thinking anything other than, "WHAT THE FUCK!?!??!?! FORWARD PROGRESS!!!! WHERE'S THE FUCKING WHISTLE!?!?!"

it was 6 points, dood. that was a costly ref fuck-up. don't blame the 5'SIX guy butt-raped by 3 defensive players.

right: there are way way too many rules anyways (see any patriots game against possible 'contenders')

i didn't believe his forward progress was stopped. his feet were still moving him forward ever so slightly.

which is exactly why it was mendy's fault. he should have went down.

NittanySteel, I hear what you're saying, but you're talking about the most complicated sport on planet earth, with a rulebook twice as thick as any other. What's one more rule at this point?

Take the fumble by Heath into the endzone. In Pop Warner, High School, and College ball, that's a Steeler TD, because a Steeler recovered it. Only in pro's is that not a TD, because teams started "fumbling" the ball forward, so they changed the rule to prevent it. NFL changes 30+ rules a year to keep the game from going down paths deemed inappropriate.

The zebras shoulda ruled the play over due to lack of forward progress. Otherwise, I see holding a player up, gang tackling, pulling the guy over so he lands on a player instead of the ground, and stripping the ball as a viable strategy. What a fun game that shall be.

you can't be serious, can you???

there was a negative four yard difference from the time of first contact to the time the ball was stripped.

definitely no 'ever so slightly' forward motion. definitely 'ever so slightly' backward motion.

did you even watch the game?

Have to agree here... numerous replays CLEARLY show him going 4 yards backward.
