Does everyone remember Kendrell Bell. This guy was an absolute beast when he started and had great promise to be an outstanding linebacker. After he suffered his high ankle sprain he was never the same. Seemed like every time the guy was said to be ready to play he would go out and re-injure himself. Eventually the Steelers got rid of him and he did nothing his entire short career. Seeing Timmons come down with this same injury is scary. This guy has all the potential in the world to be a great linebacker for the Steelers, and with Polamalu out we need him big time. So, in practice today he goes out and re-injures the ankle!!!! This guy needs to sit for 3-4 weeks to totally heal this problem. The high ankle sprain in the worst of all ankle injuries, so let's hope that what happened to Bell does not happen to Timmons.

I couldn't agree more BigE. I said the same thing right after it was announced that Timmons had a high ankle sprain. I sure hope Fox can fill in adequately over the next several weeks because Timmons won't be back anytime soon.

The smart thing to do for the coaches would be to let him heal completely. He tweaked the ankle in practice again today, not a good sign. Fox is above-average as far as backups go, so the staff should play this smart and let Timmons make a full recovery.

It's certainly starting to look this way. Let's take a look at our top 2 picks under the Tomlin era.

1. Timmons - made of glass and is on his way to becoming Kendrell Bell
2. Woodley - an absolute beast, you've gotta love this guy

1. Mendenhall - nobody knows because he missed the majority of his rookie season due to injury and runs behind a shit line
2. Sweed - getting his ass handed to him by 3rd rounder Mike Wallace

1. Hood - has to rot on the bench this year because Dick won't play a rookie

1 outta 4 aint too good.

Obviously there is still a lot of time left for these player to show something. I just hope they show something sometime soon

Made of glass? When else has he been hurt? Timmons is a beast who has a common injury. People need to stop over reacting, this is football people get hurt all the time and someone steps in to fill the void.

The other injury that comes to mind for me is the groin injury he suffered as a rookie. He missed all of camp and was played sparingly on special teams that year. I think the frustration comes from the high expectations everyone has for him. Here it is, his third year, and we thought we might finally get to see what our 1st round pick from 3 years ago could do as a starter. If he misses a significant amount of time due to this high ankle sprain it's going to be EXTREMLY disappointing. I agree with you derfsandmuskie, some of us could be over reacting. I would just hate to lose Timmons, whose shown flashes of brilliance, for any signifcant amount of time

Why do we worry about a high ankle sprain....bad luck. When Timmons fully recovers the doubting will stop.

When I heard that Timmons might play sunday my first reaction was too early. Yesterday's practice confirmed that. I wish they would let these players heal properly. I thought they had some of the best trainers in the business. The coaching staff, and many on this board, will be complaining if Troy doesn't want to come back to soon. Playing with an injury hurts the team - playing too early hurts them worse because it drags the injury out further.

Remember Troy playing with that injured shoulder. Taking missed dives at RBs ankles because he knew he couldn't tackle with his body.

It's too early to start dogging Tomlin's drafts. I'd say the early returns are pretty good:

Noll, Cowher and Tomlin all drafted four future starters in their first draft (counting Hanratty and Sepulveda) Noll gets the nod for Greene and Greenwood, but I'd argue Tomlin and Cowher are a push:

Noll: Greene, Hanratty, Kolb & Greenwood
Cowher: Searcy, Kirkland, Steed & Perry
Tomlin: Timmons, Woodley, Sepulveda & Gay (Spaeth)

Again Noll wins for year two (2 HOFers), but again Tomlin is at worst a push with Cowher and may well prove out much better than the chin:

Noll: Bradshaw, Shanklin & Blount
Cowher: Figures, Chad Brown, Willie Williams, Hastings & Kevin Henry
Tomlin: Mendenhall, Sweed, Mundy, Hills & Dixon

Wow, I forgot how great the early drafts were under Noll. Everybody knows about '74, but check out what he did in '71 AFTER drafting 4 HOFers (including future HOFer L.C. Greenwood) in his first two years. Of course we can't judge this year's draft yet, but again I see it as a push at worst with Cowher's 3rd draft:

Noll: Frank Lewis, Jack Ham, Gerry Mullins, Dwight White, Larry Brown, Ernie Holmes & Mike Wagner
Cowher: Charles Johnson, Buckner, Gilden, Bam Morris, Boo Bell
Tomlin: Hood, Urbik, Wallace, Lewis, Summers & Johnson

I agree nobody beats Noll. So far Cowher / Tomlin is a push. Willing to bet Tomlin pulls away from Cowher

Again, Noll was amazing....but he did have the benefit of some great position in the draft. He got #4 in his first draft, #1 in his second and #8 in his third. Average position = #4.

Cowher averaged #17: #11, #23 & #17

Tomlin averaged #23: #15, #23 & #32

Just to round out the discussion. Bill Cowher left Tomlin with a very good team to draft around. In Cowher's last 4 drafts he nabbed:

Roethlisberger, Polamalu, Holmes, Miller, Taylor, Colon, McFadden, Starks & Kemoeatu

Noll left Cowher a fairly good group as well. Noll's last 4 drafts yielded:

Foster, Lake, Dawson, Worley, Mills, Eric Green, O'Donnell, Strzelczyk, Olsavsky and Haselrig.

Noll on the other hand got shit. The only decent player the Steelers drafted in the 4 years before Noll was Rocky Bleier.
