Redman vs Summers
Can someone please explain to me how a team that couldn't convert on third and less than three yards time and time again last year sent a guy who was killing it in short yardage drills in camp and was damn near unstoppable on short yardage downs in pre season down to the practice squad and kept a fat lump of shit who couldn't block his way out of a paper bag on the roster? Honestly, what the fuck?!?!? From all accounts that I read during the pre season Fat Frank was getting lit up by the likes of William Gay and couldn't break the goal line during camp drills. So what the hell? If it was a case of wanting a blocking back in the back field they could have easily gone with our rookie tight end Johnson. He was a stud in camp and didn't look too bad in pre season. I'm afraid we're going to be seeing a lot of shotgun plays on third and one simply because we can't run for a yard....
Re: Redman vs Summers
From nearly all accounts out of camp, Redman was the clear choice over Summers. Summers isn't Tim Lester and the offense doesn't require a fullback. I think that Redman, although a situational player, would have been a better pick for the 53 man roster. But, if you look at BA's play calling choices, he clearly chooses to throw over run in short yardage situations. The run-pass ratio is so skewed, that it's beyond a lack of confidence in the running game and clearly pure choice on his part. I'll have to see if I can find the numbers behind that because it's staggering. I think he had a big hand in the Summers over Redman choice albeit for unknown and unclear reasons.
Parker seems to want to prove that he is a traditional back (hey Willie, your have speed, use your f'n wheels and bounce some runs outside damnit!) and Mendy is on the slow track (hello Mr. High Pedigree... can we kick it gear and not be Tim Worley?). We don't have a short yardage back at the moment but with BA at the helm, I'm not sure that matters.

Redman will be part of the 53 man roster by the end of the season. Bank on it. If towards the end of the season Tomlin has seen enough of willie, or if he gets nicked up, I think he places him on IR and brings up a pair of fresh legs for the playoffs. Our depth should be Moore, Mendy, Redman, Summers, and Logan as a WR/RB.

I'm not the biggest Parker fan in the world but I have a hard time seeing Summers in the line up over Parker. Parker would be effective if he had an o-line that could open some holes for him once and a while.

Re: Redman vs Summers
Not that Summers did not have his missed blocks Thursday night.
However, was Redman used at all as a blocking back in training camp? Just curious.
Also, I have heard that Summers was not a fullback in college so he is learning a new role. I am guessing the Steelers think he would be picked up if moved to the practice squad. However, learning in big/close games is really hairy.

I know for sure willie can't lead block anyone, so even if summers whiffs he's big enough he'll at least make the defender sidestep or something :p To me summers is just carey davis with a different numbered jersey is all.
I really want parker to be his old self, but as someone who looked up to the bus, he has to know when he is hurting the team, and put the team first before his upcoming contract. The bus settled into his role nicely and never complained about getting the ball more. I think Tomlin needs to use the other backs, redman included, throughout the year in different situations to find the next parker. We don't need a homerun hitter anymore, that team is long gone. We need a reliable 3.5 ypc and more importantly a guy that can get positive yards AFTER first contact. If I see willie limply fall down while hitting a hole or dropped after an arm tackle one more time I will have seen enough from him. He no longer fits our blocking "scheme" if you want to call it that. It just seems like to me in limited looks, redman made the most of his blocks and kept his legs churning like the ol' bus himself. GET HIM IN THERE COACH!!!
