Hartwig extended in new deal

Postby StillMill » Tue Sep 08, 2009 5:07 pm

per the PG, The Steelers came to one final contract extension before the regular season starts when center Justin Hartwig today signed a four-year, $10 million contract. The deal includes a $2.1 million signing bonus.

----- ------- -------

as I've stated, Reed was the bigger priority, but he rejected an unspecified offer last nite. It was probably a measley, lowball offer. The Hartwig signing is good....VERY cheap & very cap friendly, considering his starting status and solid ability.

I know Hartwig is better than Mahan was but, do we really want this guy longterm?

I was going to jump on the ball and break the news about 3 hours ago, but I was so disgusted by this signing that I just hoped it would go away. The only thing certain with the offseason extensions of Maxi Pad, Rikishi Phatu, and Hartwig is that we will have the worst offensive line for the next 3 years.

Arians must be smiling with his dick in his hand.

Yunz are a bit off base here:

a. Hartwig isn't Mike Webster, but he ain't no Mahan, either. He's an acceptable center. He gives us a solid center for 4 more years, which we can then shift our focus (ie, the draft) & address other problems at G and T.

b. This deal is DIRT cheap. A starter with solid health, getting paid $10M over FOUR years....? With a measley $2M signing bonus? That's PEANUTS in today's NFL. Consider this -- Nate Washington got a six-year, $27 million deal that included $9 million in guaranteed money. And we all know all too well about Nate and his limits.

Not the route I would have gone.
Steelers extended Kemo and Hartwig this year.
Neither are great o-lineman.

Let's not compare these 2 as if they are equals. They are not.

Chris Kemo is a pile of shit. Hartwig is at least acceptable.

Just saying, these 2 are the two on the o-line that the front office extended.
Says something about their approach.

I'm worried that the front office believes the bullshit Arians is selling. Wasn't it Arians who said that only a third of the sacks were the o-lines fault? That the majority of the sacks were the fault of the tight ends and running backs failing to pick up a blitz or that Ben held onto the ball to long? It's really makes me wonder how long our o-line is going to be as shitty as it is...

I actually like this signing. We've had numerous back-up offensive lineman make more than this, and this actually (hopefully) will allow us some cap space to sign someone worth money elsewhere on the line

Posted on another line that Arians, The Wizard of Tetherball, said that Willie Colon is one of top 3 tackles in NFL. Sorry, I'm not bitin' here and you know his agent will look for the BIG ONE next year. I am NOT a Colon fan. My other post says why. Maybe Hartwig is good financially and acceptable as center. I am not too good on the individual play of each, BUT with Starks signed and Chris " I'm Mad as Hell and I'll do Sumpin' Stupid to Prove it" Kemo signed, I agree that we might be stuck on mediocrity for awhile. Means Ben's, FWP's, Mendy's careers are to be shortlived as well. Sad state there.

Surprised that the draft brought no help but maybe looking down the road to 2010 draft and grab 2-3 OL as projects for when these guys phase out. Not good. Need left side help ASAP.

Good thing the playbook ain't too big or technical that they might grab one off the wire and plug him in real quick order.
