Why Schottenheimer never won a Super Bowl and Cowher did

Postby bellenberger » Sat Aug 29, 2009 9:57 pm

From Carl Peterson, Chiefs GM during Derrick Thomas' HOF induction speech:

"I'll tell you the story about a young Bill Cowher and Marty. Derrick in his first year as a rookie had 75 tackles, 10 sacks, three fumbles caused. Two fumbles recovered, was the Defensive Rookie of the Year. Later in the spring of 1990, Bill Cowher came to Marty, said “Marty, I've got a great idea. Why don't we do this on the defense? We'll get Derrick lined up in his three-point stance in his normal position right outside linebacker. Then on on the snap of the ball we'll drop him into coverage. We'll bring a couple of guys.” I said, ‘Bill, that's a very interesting concept. Just answer me one question, why would we be having our best pass rusher run away from the quarterback?’

Derrick that year had 20 sacks, and I think without question, that's called great coaching. "

Hmm, I don't know Marty. Maybe because the element of surprise is a huge part of football, especially on the defensive side? And maybe because you want to win an occasional playoff game every now and then, and being predictable during the big game isn't going to cut it!

And Carl calls this great coaching! No wonder the Chiefs haven't won anything in decades. And this speech was given AFTER he watched James Harrison drop back into coverage and run 100 yards to help win the Super Bowl.

And say what you will about Cowher, at least he was smart enough on the defensive side of the ball to not listen to Marty. We give LeBeau (deservatively so) alot of credit on the defensive side for the Zone Blitz, but it is interesting that Cowher had his own ideas for mixing up rushes and coverages.

Bill Cowher won a Super Bowl because he worked for Dan Rooney. Period. Had he been hired by any other organization he would have been fired multiple times.

If Marty Schottenheimer had been lured away from the Chiefs by the Steelers in 1992 the franchise would be looking for it's 9th or 10th title this season instead of "knocking on seven's door." Bill Cowher would have had unsuccessful stints at KC (taking over for Marty) and who knows how many other dumpy franchises before getting the final boot without the $ for the new teeth.

no coach could have led the chiefs past the bills in the afc playoffs.

Where else has Marty coached? How many Super Bowls has he been in? Why do you assume Marty in Pittsburgh would have been anything different than Marty in KC or San Diego?

Marty ball is only good through the first 16 games.

That doesn't let him or Cowher off the hook. The next logical question is why didn't he ever have a Ben.

AMEN I have always said we won Super Bowl XL IN SPITE of Bill Cowher, not because we had him. My favorite clip of that gam is Cowher hugging Ben and Ben says, "Now we gotta keep on them, we can't play not to lose" or words to that effect

Edit. I am still PO'd at Cowher for going into Prevent D against Atlanta in Mid 3rd qtr. Causing the first tie in 10 years.

Would we be looking at nine or ten Superbowl titles? Or would we be aiming for our sixth? Don't confuse him for a Superbowl winning coach, he's not. Both coaches were poor at being flexible and managing games as they went on.

you can't say how many super bowls we would have with/without cowher. it's a tough thing to do, and having a great coach & team doesn't guarantee one (ex. the bills).
