PRESEASON...

Postby Crucible-steel-kid » Thu Aug 27, 2009 6:19 pm

Does anyone think that preseason results are indicative of regular season performance or possible S.B. visits? K.D.K.A. said that after S.B. XIV Pgh lost all 4 preseason games from that previous summer...

Preseason is, for the most part, meaningless for many reasons.

As far as the season after SB XIV, that team was on the decline. They still had talent and were competitive, but the dynasty was clearly coming to an end. Many would argue they were actually OUTPLAYED by the Rams; however, Stallworth (if I recall, Swann was injured during the game and missed most of it) and Bradshaw hooked up on a few big plays ("60 Prevent Slot Hook and Go" was the play) that was the difference.

so no, they are not indicative at all.

The final score of preseason games and the resulting record does not mean much. However, watching our first team offense getting blown off the ball and averaging only 3.5 yds per rush is very indicative of what the season may hold.

It is absolutely no indication of the season. Veterans are rested and the coaches are putting young players in different scenarios to see how they respond. Example: The coaches wanted to see how Burnett would do on punt returns. He fumbled and cost us the game. Will Burnett be returning punts in the regular season?

I seem to recall a few preseasons ago when Willie Reid and Santonio Holmes muffed every punt that didn't go OOB. Then, 2 weeks later, they muffed a few more in the regular season. Hopefully, Tomlin learned from those debacles.

The only pre-season game that has any relevance to the regular season may be PS week 3 game where starters usually play the most. But, for the most part the pre-season is for evaluating the young guns and the scores are completely meaningless toward the regular season. I do not care if the team loses every pre-season game. As long as they get a good evaluation of the talent and nobody gets injured too badly.
Marines should come with warning labels.
