Sweed's two catches

Postby DirtDawson » Fri Aug 14, 2009 2:54 pm

I know it's kind of innane to dissect the two receptions from a preseason performance, but i want to really break things down to get some of my fellow stiller fans to understand WHY some of us keep saying he's going to be special.

http://www.nfl.com/videos/pittsburgh-st ... rdinals-10

you can see his two catches in sequence starting at the 1 minute mark.

The first catch was on a classic 3rd and long situation, when the defense is bringing a 4 man blitz, Sweed was on a slant rout across the weak side.

Ben bullets the ball at a high point, to the height that would separate Limas from the defenders.

No only does Sweed demonstrate his vertical skills, but he also catches the ball on his outstretched hands (remember, Plexico's main problem had always been he was an "arm catcher" which negated some of the advantages of his height).

But he also comes down with the ball showing amazing controll and concentration, keeping the ball caught behind the defender's helmet, despite being upended by two defenders on the way down.

His second catch of the day just shows what he can offer in single man coverage on deep routes.

His talent, and his strongest asset as a reciever, is how he adjusts his body to the ball.

The pass is underthrown, and even in full stride he shows some fundamental abilities to slow down, turn around, adjust to the ball, commit to the catch, and protect the possesion.

When many other recievers in this league would have just kept running and then pointed fingers at the QB.

I know i know i KNOW its still early to judge him. I KNOW its the preseason, and I know it was against the cardinals bench.

All i'm saying is...take notice. ;)

Good. Our second round pick from last year who sat out most of last year caught some passes in preseason. Guess we are going back to the Super Bowl!

Just goofing. I hope he continues to improve. Nate Washingotn was no first-year wonder when he got here so I am looking forward to see Sweed's development. I hope the fans and coaches are patient and he justifies the investment.

Hey all, isn't it just freakin awesome that we have football in our lives again!!!!!! TEAM STILLERS- F**K YEAH! HERE WE COME TO WIN ANOTHER SUPER BOWL YEAH! TEAM STILLERS- F**K YEAH! (sung to the tune of "Team America")

He's one of those players whose stock dropped in the draft because of an injury, not because of mediocre play.

IF he entered the draft the year before his wrist injury, he would've been gone in the first round, just like Santonio.

i noticed those catches as well... especially the first one. REALLY went up for it and held onto it amazingly, even with a defender between him and the ball.

i am excited about sweed

I have always been a very vocal Sweed supporter and i do believ he will yet develop into a legitimate weapon ; however, way to early to get too excited just yet.
He did have two nice grabs, followed by one horrific, weak-assed effort that prevented a first down inside the red zone.
The TV iso showed a horrible, lazy pattern (which was still enough to get open) followed by a drop of an easily-catchable ball. Frankly, I was much more impressed w/# 17.

Dirt, Dermontti is going to start getting jealous if you keep pumping up Limabean so much on this board haha

He looked great on the deep underthrown ball, but the mistake he made on the out route, when he ran a terrible route and was unable to make the catch is still the kind of the thing he needs to correct. I understand he didn't play much last year, but at some point in the near future mistakes like this need to be corrected.

I don't know what the relationship is like between Limas and Hines (I'd assume they get along great), but it would be great if Hines took him under his wing to teach him the ins and outs of being a professional receiver.

I am not judging Sweed one way or another, but that first catch was an easy one that he made look hard.

Kudos on the 2nd catch, though. You would never see Nate make that kind of catch.

If Sweed and Wallace combine for 4-6 catches a game, we move the chains, keep drives alive, keep our Def. off the field and fresh, we win it all. Just to keep 1 extra drive alive per game, (we almost always have 1 dominating qtr where we keep the ball for 10. mins +), now if we can get 2 major drives per game, we wear out oppos. def. and score more.

Broken record here but Arians sees "3 and outs" as a good thing. Forget seeing Dixon, or some reverse tosses from this guy. We just have so many weapons I think. Where is MT demanding some excitement?
Go back to playoffs of '05 when we had some real game plans that kept defenses guessing and out of their jocks. Used the run in 2nd half just to kill time! By then Colts, et al were worn out and mentally defeated from 1st half track meets.

Ah, the good ol' days.
Arians sucks, ...period! Both of his plays in his playbook are old and tired.

Dirt;

Good analysis. Sweed has progressed a lot from last year and it looks like the injury is behind him. I liked him last year as well and thought everyone needed to give the kid a break.

He has more talent and natural ability than Washington and will show it in his second year.

To bad guys like Bruce Davis and Tony Hills have not shown this type of progression from rookie to second year.

Didn't sweed also drop one on an easy 10 and out pattern?

He also ran an out route....three yards out of bounds, a 2nd yr wide receiver in the NFL should know where they are on the field

Let me copy and paste a comment I made after the Arizona game into a comment after the Redskins game:
Didn't sweed also drop an easy one on a 10 yrd down and out pattern?

The subject of this thread should be Sweed's two drops.

I am on the Sweed bandwagon for a different reason. This guy is a great blocking WR. Did anyone catch his block on the LE/DT that helped Willie Parker score in the Redskins game? Go back and watch some footage. This guy will also be the difference between a 20 yard run and a run to the house. Plax is Finally going to have to learn to block in Prison.
