Camp Cupcake???

Postby thesteelhammer » Mon Aug 17, 2009 8:37 pm

That's what one pundit is calling Tomlin's camp his year.

IN AN ODD WAY, IT SORTA MAKES SENSE... DID COACH NOLL EVER DO THIS? IF HE DID, I WOULDN'T BE TO EXCITED ABOUT IT UNTIL THEIR PERFORMANCE STARTS SLIPPING...

" Just hours after witnessing the stark rigidity of New England's camp and seeing the blunt militarism of Cleveland's, Tomlin's camp was, well, different."

Maybe the powers that be in the nfl have deemed that the Steelers aren't to win it all this season and Tomlin knows this.

Reading this article it seems to me that there is some risk here for Tomlin if his team fails to rise to the challenge this year and defend the Super Bowl Title. It begs the question, if Tomlin pulls a Cowhard and fails to make the playoffs......... God forbid but is his job secure? That's a scary thought. :!: Slap me I need to wake up from that nightmear.

Yes, his job is secure even if they don't make the playoffs. The guy won a SB in his second year, so honestly I think they could go 4-12 and his job is still secure at the end of the season.

I'm not buying into this article. Knowing what Tomlin has done so far in the Burgh, running an extremely tough camp his 1st yr and his overall demeanor of "we're going to take it one game at a time, control what we can control" etc., I would have full confidence that these guys will be ready to go come September 10th.

Keep in mind, this is an older team (as mentioned in the article) so the majority of these guys not only do not need to be put through the gauntlet every day in camp, but it would probably be detrimental to them especially at the end of the season.

WHEN YOU STOP AND THINK ABOUT IT, THEY ONLY GOT LIKE 6-8 WEEKS OFF TO THEMSELVES TO LIVE THEIR LIVES AWAY FROM THE N.F.L. THESE GUYS MIGHT SUFFER FROM BURNOUT IF PRESSED WAY TOO MUCH. TIME WILL TELL.

It's a long season. Too long. The pro game has become a war of attrition as much as a game of power, skill, strategy, and execution. To win it all you have to play 23-24 games. I remember being totally beat at the end of a 10 game season in high school.

The days of training camp as a time to "get back in shape" went away when players didn't have to take "off-season" jobs. They show up in shape (any PUP's this year, or did Tomlin's treatment of Hampton last year do the trick?).

Tomlin doesn't have to prove he's a hard-ass.

Realistically, how many open slots are there on this roster? 10-15? I'll bet those on the cusp of making the roster are having their butts worked off. Wearing out the veterans and the guys who are guaranteed to make the roster is pointless. Better to have them in solid shape at the end of the season.
