Parker not in Steelers future plans

Postby thesteelhammer » Tue Aug 04, 2009 7:28 pm

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports the Pittsburgh Steelers have sent out signals by their silence that perhaps there is no future for RB Willie Parker with the team. Parker is heading into the last year of his contract, and there are no discussions to extend the deal. "That's neither here nor there," Parker said of the lack of talks to extend his contract. "I'm here trying to get right this season. I have to bounce back from last season and see where it goes from there."

Kinda figured that out when they spent a #1 on Mendy.

I love FWP and obviously hope he has a great season. But I think that in today's day and age of NFL running backs you don't pay the running backs who have had 3-5 good seasons for you. It just seems that these guys always decline and decline quickly after they get that big contract. The shelf life of a running back is so short nowadays.

I understand that loyalty is a very valuable quality to have in any sports organization, but from a business standpoint you almost need to ride these guys for the few years that they're good for you and then part ways when it comes time for the big contract. I just don't think business wise it makes sense.

I couldn't agree more Lake37. I hope Willie has a great season this year only because I want the Steelers to win. After this season though, I think its time to make a change at running back. I sure hope Mendy is up to the challenge.

I'm not fully convinced that it's time to make a change and hope that he has a great season this year. I'm not convinced he is going to have a great season either. I would be upset if they paid him big bucks to keep him around. He had one great season and then got into injury trouble. Bad break for him and us. If he can't stay healthy then he's not a long term back or at the very least we can afford to pay him like one. I love what he has done for us and would love to see him running the ball effectively for a long time . I wouldn't be willing to gamble on that with my money so I can totally understand why the front office won't either.

I too hope Willy stays health and has a great season. He should be offered money as a secondary role as a third down back going forward. His playing days are far from over but no longer the back that should get all the carries.

I doubt that Willie would be willing to accept the money of a third down back, and I don't think I would if I were him either. I would also be willing to bet that some team out there would make him a better offer than that of what Pittsburgh should/will.
