Sweed Still Sucks

Postby No l Gravity l » Mon Jun 08, 2009 11:55 pm

Sweed Struggling Early
Not good for Sweed ... I said the moment they signed McDonald from Free Agency that because he is a crafty veteran who runs decent routes, he probably has the best chance of being our #3 WR next year.

Quote:
Although it’s football in shorts, our favorite insider Jim Wexell said in his latest update on Steelers OTA’s that Sweed won’t be the team’s no. 3 WR this year. He said the favorite right now has to be Shaun MCDonald, not that he has shown much either. The reason? No one else appears capable of running those inside routes that veteran slot receivers can run. Sweed also had a rough day on Wednesday catching the football, with 2 big drops.

- And the person who Wex feels has the only real chance of beating out McDonald for the open slot receiver spot? Street free agent WR Brandon Williams.

- A big day for punt returners. Wex said that Stefan Logan, who teammates have nicknamed “Half-pint”, will have a fan following by training camp because of his quickness. Apparently, Tomlin is taking a liking to the guy as well. After Logan went deep to snag a ball over his shoulder, Tomlin asked him if he had ever played baseball before, and told him to catch the next deep one like a center fielder. A few kicks later, Logan took his eyes off the ball, ran to a spot, just like he was Willie Mays, turned, picked up the ball and caught it easily. Tomlin’s response? “There you go!”

- While Logan impressed, Wex said he believes 5th-rounder Joe Burnett is the leader for the PR gig, showing poise and polish beyond his years. He believes Burnett is a natural punt-catcher and knows exactly what he wants to do with the ball and where he wants to go. He asked an assistant coach if Burnett has a good chance to be the no. 1 PR. The AC said Burnett has a “GREAT” chance to be the man. We all know who is the no. 1 KR, he of the 4.28 speed in the 40 and stylist Mohawk, Mr. Mike “Just Watch Me Take It 2 The House” Wallace.

- Wex noted that 3rd-round rookie CB Keenan Lewis flashed pro recovery speed to break up a deep pass intended for Brandon Williams on one play. Did I mention before that Wex, D. Lolley and a few scouts attending the Steelers practices really like this Williams kid?

- Catch of the day went to Heath Miller, who turned CB/S Roy Lewis around on one play to get behind him and haul in a deep pass. On the next play, Big Ben scrambled, motioned for TE Matt Spaeth to break deep, but he couldn’t lose Lewis, who broke up the pass.

That’s it for now.

Not all WR's are cut out to be a #3 - Sweed is a big kid (6'4) Most #3's seem to be smallish quick guys ala Welker, Randle El etc. Even Nate Warsh is 6'1. Ward ain't playing #1 forever so if they can groom Sweed, he could end up being a nice tandem w/ Tone.

In my opinion, Sweed will be fine.

I agree. Those drops last year were about concentration, not injury. He should have been able to pull those in with nubs at the wrist. :sucrutches: :sucrutches:

It's noteworthy, however that he still isn't looking the ball in. http://news.steelers.com/article/105658/ look at his eyes.

My son at Iowa State said Sweed was a man among boys when Texas played them. Torched them for over 200 on a handful of catches. I do hope the talent is there and I hope he grabs the offense. If Wallace is all they say he is, he is your No. 3 with Sweed giving Hines and Tone a break now and then. Love his size and apparent athleticism. Thought his block on Ivy in Raven game was a breakthrough moment. I say give him all the starts in preseason and feed him. I agree he is more a 1 or 2 type. Let Hines rest and just play a few sets. You KNOW Hines will show up in Sept. but imagine having Sweed ready to play with Tone, Hines, Miller to defend. OOPs, there I go again,...dreaming. We got Arians.

Limas made great plays in college. He is yet to take his skills to the next level and make NFL plays. Lets hope he doesn't feel the need to be a spectacular player at this point in his professional career.

Sweed has some eye issues if I'm not mistaken as well...just started wearing contacts last year.

The only thing I really didn't like about this kid last year besides the drops was when he acted like he got hurt when he dropped an easy catch against b-more. Ben musta taught him that trick...lol

Sweed should be fine. As to the underneath No. 3 Receiver routes, they would be better having Ward slide over and run those on certain downs than putting Sweed there. It means nothing that he is not a No. 3. He was drafted to some day take over for Ward as a No. 1 or 2. Wallace is the guy I do not understand. He was not projected to go anywhere near as high as they drafted him and looked to be a major reach as to whether he could play at all. Hopefully, he can but other than running a go route, he probably is only a kick returner.

I am not sure why the Stillers are not looking at other free agents. There is still a lot of talent out there: Marvin Harrision for one.

Let's hope they have a useful plan.

Harrison wants WAY too much $$ for a 35-yr old possession WR. But if he came, it'd be fun watching him jawbone w/ Ike at practice. Shoeless Ike's been the only DB I've ever seen Harrison get pi$$ed off about in a gm.
