Re: Mike King says Steelers are #2
they have chicago at #4, so you can't take anything on there too seriously.
three of their top ten won't even make the playoffs. CHI, PHI, BAL.

King adds some explination today.

recent history tells us there's a 12-percent chance the Steelers will repeat? Let's look at the Super Bowl winners this decade, and what happened the following year:
2000: Baltimore beat the Giants 34-7, then went 10-6 and lost a divisional playoff game the next year.
2001: New England beat St. Louis 20-17, then went 9-7, out of the playoffs the next year.
2002: Tampa Bay beat Oakland 48-21, then went 7-9, out of the playoffs the next year.
2003: New England beat Carolina 32-29, then went 14-2 and won the Super Bowl the next year.
2004: New England beat Philadelphia 24-21, then went 10-6 and lost a divisional playoff game the next year.
2005: Pittsburgh beat Seattle 21-10, then went 8-8, out of the playoffs the next year.
2006: Indianapolis beat Chicago 29-17, then went 13-3 and lost a divisional playoff game to San Diego the next year.
2007: The Giants beat New England 17-14, then went 12-4 and lost a divisional playoff game to Philadelphia the next year.
One for 8. One Super Bowl winner. One conference champion.
That's my point: History says Pittsburgh's got a steep hill to climb here, and the Steelers may well do it. But the more I watch this game, the more I realize there's a reason teams don't repeat. I love the Steelers, I love everything about the Rooney/Tomlin regime, and I love the leaders on their team. But I respect history, too. And this New England team comes back with a quarterback who I think will be healthy, and a quarterback and a team that will come back hungry to prove they're still a champion. Just my opinion
Re: Mike King says Steelers are #2
That sounds nice and all, but his numbers are totally arbitrary. Why stop at 2000? The Steelers have won 6 out of 43 Super Bowls, so they've won 14% of them. Does that mean they have a 14% chance of winning it this year? Do we have to wait until Super Bowl 50 for them to win again, maintaining that 14% rate? It is all nonsense and this is why I can't read Peter King. He's better than that jerkoff, Don Banks, but neither of them can hold a candle to Zimmerman. Damn, I miss that guy.
No team is exactly the same each year. Rosters change, guys get older, etc. We all know this. So, each year is like starting from scratch and everyone has the same chance. Except they don't, of course. Some teams are more talented, have better coaching, and just have a much better shot at winning. Some teams are almost always going to be in the hunt. Some teams just have the right culture and attitude and it sustains success over a long period of time.
I don't think there is any good way to calculate the Steelers chance to repeat. Vegas will figure it out, though. For me, right now, I'd give them a 25-30% chance of winning it all again.

Unlike in the Cowher years, the Steelers are coming back with a head coach who has a brain. One that matches up favorably with that of Bellacheat's, I might add. This is going to be an interesting season. Bring 'em on.

Difficulty in Repeating as Champs is a total myth:
Green Bay
Miami
Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh
San Fran
Giants
Cowboys
Broncos
Pats
So, 18 Super Bowls out of the 43 were involved in back to back wins - that's 42% of all Super bowls played so the Steelers actually have a very good statistical chance to repeat since a repeat has not happened in four years.
Couple that with the fact that the Steelers are playing a relatively easy schedule and it looks like they will have a pretty good shot at repeating. It may depend on who their opponent is in the Super Bowl.

These guys get paid to have an opinion. and it funny to me that when they express that everyone balks at it (or maybe barks at it)- particularly Steelers fans who can't deal with the fact that there are 31 other teams in the league. Nothing wrong with the steelers not being ranked number one by every sports writer in the country.

you're doubling up there... 18 of the super bowls were a part of repeats, but of the 42 times a team won a super bowl, only 9 times did that team repeat, so 21%.
which still isn't too low. 1 out of 5... twice a decade... which would mean it's our turn to get the second one for this decade haha

Peter King is a friggin moron. In his columns he talks about stupid things like which place serves the best coffee in NFL cities, etc. He's like Larry King only he reports trivial matters on the NFL. Besides, do you REALLY think the Stillers will stay hungry if they were listed #1? Hell, I wish he ranked them #10.

Re: Mike King says Steelers are #2
So many things have to go right to win the Super Bowl. I'm not going to try to sort through the entire laundry list. Sometimes there is luck involved, and sometimes probably a little fancy camera work. The Stillers shouldn't be concerned that NE is on paper ahead of them. Hopefully a list like this will provide motivation for them to do something they haven't done in 5 years which is beat Tom Brady.
Every year new teams rise to the top. These teams burn hot, and compete with the rest of the elite. Sometimes these teams flame out. Most recent examples from just last season are Dallas and San Diego. We have to remember that it isn't always the team that played the best throughout the majority of the regular season that wins the big game. A recent trend would suggest that it is the team which plays the best down the stretch run, and during the post season. That is why I say there is some luck involved to win a Super Bowl. In the ultra competitive NFL you can't pick and chose when you want to string together wins. It would be safe to say most franchises would rather finish 11-5 riding a winning streak then 13-3 but having lost the last two.
Getting into the idea of a repeat is deep. When looking at how New York fell apart last season you realize that everything can go from good to bad in a blink. It shouldn't be about repeating what happened in the season before, but rather being prepared to face the challenges of the next. (End dual fisted philosophical jerking off...Now!)
Tomlin says it best. "It is not about the destination, it is about the journey."

I must also point out the cbssportsline.com football writer Pete Prisco also has the Steelers at number 2 behind the Patriots. Tom Brady always gets the love. The super bowl champs must always be ranked number 1 to start the season until someone knocks them off. These guys are just in love with Tom Shady.

I'll put it this way. When I saw Brady get his knee mangled I knew right then our chances of another title skyrocketed. Elway had retired. The Ravens had a rookie QB. Favre was too damn old. Merriman was out and LT was limping. Vince Young went AWOL.....The stars were aligned.
