James Walker, of ESPN.com, reports Pittsburgh Steelers LB James Harrison received a $10 million signing bonus as part of his six-year, $51.175 million contract. Harrison is scheduled to receive a $2.555 million roster bonus this season and an $800,000 base salary. He is scheduled to receive a $2.8 million bonus and a $755,000 base salary in 2010. In 2011, his base salary is scheduled to be $3.66 million with a $900,000 roster bonus. He is scheduled to make $5.315 million in 2012, $6.32 million in 2013 and $7.325 million in 2014.

Going into the 2012 season the Steelers will have the choice of paying Harrison $5.315 million (about $8.648 total cap hit) or suffering about a $10 million cap penalty, going into 2013 the choice will be paying him $6.32 million ($9.65 million cap hit) or suffering about a $6.67 million cap penalty, and going into 2014 the choice will be paying him $7.325 ($10.658 cap hit) or suffering about a $3.33 million cap penalty. Unless Harrison starts to totally suck the earliest he'll be released is 2014.

That's not what really what I said.

The Steelers will most certainly have a choice when the time comes. What they will most likely do is restructure his contract if he is still playing at a high level. If he's not, then a June 1 cut prorates the bonuses so they would not have 10 million dollars of dead money although I'm not sure were you get that figure from after 3 years.

His bonuses are about 15 millionso so they would eat 7 million over the first three years leaving 8 million since the bonuses are not all paid the first year.

So a June 1st cut in three years would cause the Steelers to eat 4 million of dead money for the next two years. I doubt this will happen.

In short, the most likely scenario will be a re-working of the contract in three years depending on James' future outlook at that time. So, he will not see the last three years of this contract as it stands today. James did just turn 31 on May 4th.

All of this is of course contigent on there being a salary cap or not having the salary cap explode due to the new CBA.
