Harris visiting the Steelers

Postby steelmann58 » Thu May 07, 2009 12:07 pm

Per a league source, the veteran linebacker is visiting the Steelers today.

The team’s interest in Harris makes sense; with Larry Foote gone, the Steelers need someone to back up Lawrence Timmons at one of the inside positions in the team’s 3-4 defense.

Harris was a first-round draft pick of the Raiders in 2002. In 2005, Oakland traded him to Minnesota as part of the Randy Moss deal. After Harris’ contract expired following the 2006 season, he signed with the Chiefs as a free agent.

Kansas City cut him during the 2008 season, and he returned to Minnesota to help fill the void created by a season-ending injury to E.J. Henderson. Harris appeared in ten games for the Vikings last year, starting five of them.

In 2006, Harris started 14 games at middle linebacker for the Vikings, which also was the only season that Steelers coach Mike Tomlin served as defensive coordinator in Minnesota.

One would have to think that a deal is likely. In addition to playing for MT in 06, Harris was a good 3-4 ILB for an Oakland team that had no business in a 30 front back in 04. Could be a nice pick up.

If it happens it would be a nice pick up, nothing wrong with some depth after 51 and 94
