The steelers sign two free agent QBs. Are they saying something about their faith in Dixon? I felt like we had something in Dixon about 25 to 30 lbs from now.

I think it is just having arms in mini and training camps. Dixon should hold his own against these guys. Probably no different than the Steelers bringing in 4 long snappers as they are.

Brian St. Pierre, I agree was just that. However, Omar Jacobs (a fifth round pick like Dixon) was quietly given up on by the coaches. Anyway, time will tell.

Dixon is making a big mistake if he continues to want to play quarterback in the nfl. He will ruin his career just like Kordell ruined his by thinking he will make a good nfl qb. He needs to just use his athleticism and be that all around versatile player. He'll never have a chance to start in Pittsburgh, so use what the good Lord gave you and help better the team in that way.

personally i'm not a big fan of the wildcat formation, but with dixon he gives us that dimension and i think arians is open enough to give it a shot. we saw it in the preseason last year, and will probably see it again this year. arians is stocking up on versatile players i.e davis, frank the tank, mchugh, miller, moore, mendy, and willy brings speed to the edge. i would like to see more of the power run game, but throwing in some wildcat packages in certain situations would be at least one more thing for opposing defenses to prepare for. i am not alone when i say the steelers can be a bit predictable on offense...

The second poster is correct. They just need more arms for minicamps and especially for training camp. If one of those guys actually performs well, who knows, maybe they'll make the practice squad if no other team wants them.

Dixon obviously is being groomed as Roethlisberger's backup. After not being able to bring Leftwich back at a bargain, the Stillers re-signed Batch to a 1-year contract to be the backup this year. Also, Dixon should be a capable NFL quarterback. While he is extremely mobile, he actually has NFL talent. Remember, he was a Heisman frontrunner in college before injuring his knee, and he did it on being a good thrower, not just a running threat. Heck, the Dolphins are giving WVU's Pat White a chance to play some QB, not just being Wildcat gimmick player, and he's far less capable at QB.

Bottom line: The coaching staff likes Dixon and he will be the backup in 2010.

I think Dixon can play , but he played in mostly a spread formation in college. He can throw, and he's athletic, but he needs polishing to be a solid NFL QB. Even a backup.

This guy should be a slash, but Arians lacks imagination. He is not a backup type as in strong and steady.

I think Dixon could come along if Arians could find a way to work him into the offense. He is quick and elusive, and could give us options on 3rd and short. The question really is, why not use him?

Here are some notes and observations from Day 2:

* I'm pleasantly surprised with the way second-year quarterback Dennis Dixon is throwing the football this weekend. In the four practices the past two days, Dixon's ball has been a tight spiral more often than not and his accuracy has been solid. Saturday Dixon placed a ball over the middle through three defenders to hit receiver Brandon Williams in one of the best throws of minicamp thus far.

Dixon should be given the back-up role this coming season.

And Brucie needs to get him on to the field not just at the expense of Big Ben.

It will be a big mistake not to give this guy some time if only to showcase his talents, as future draft trade fodder.

I don't think the 'black QB' bias has any merit in this case. There is a bias against overly athletic QB's in general. If you look at this team an athletic white guy was backed-up by 2 black pocket-type statues. It was actually refreshing last year in DC watching the black pocket QB get the ball out on time and not hold it forever. This is no knock on Ben but at that point in the season Ben's shoulder was hurting and I was afraid for his health the way he held onto the ball. (his post-season play once again demonstrated that he plays by a different set of rules than most QB's)

The point is that the statue black QB's (i.e. Moon, Doug Williams, pre-injury Culpepper) have out-performed ultra-athletic black QB's. The exceptions to this are McNabb and McNair. Like Big Ben, Elway, Favre etc... McNabb RUNS TO THROW and DOESN'T run to advance the ball that much. (throwing is always the 1st option when the play breaks down) McNair learned to do this a few years into his career and became much better. (Culpepper was very similar to Big Ben) Bottom line, if Dixon can improve his pocket presence and keep his eyes downfield while his is scrambling he could be a very good NFL QB.

Dixon is on the wrong team for his set of skills. Face it, Ben's scrambling is the most creativiy this SB-winning team will showcase. Ain't no way fat-face Arians is gonna deviate from this formula - hell, he can't even incorporate Heath's skills well let alone a greenhorn like Dixon. If I were Dixon, I'd probly want out.
