Reports from Mini-Camp

Postby thesteelhammer » Sat May 02, 2009 7:08 pm

ESPN's James Walker reports:
Pittsburgh Steelers WR Limas Sweed, a second-year player, has made great strides entering this summer. He is making a lot of plays and turning heads during workouts.
and that Pittsburgh Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall (shoulder) is back to normal after missing most of his rookie year. His previous shoulder injury limited his workouts, so he lost upper body muscle mass. He has since been able to rebuild his strength and looks back to normal.

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports:

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martin Nance (undisclosed) is being held out of the team's minicamp for an undisclosed reason. Head coach Mike Tomlin said the reason should be determined by Monday, May 4;
Pittsburgh Steelers FS Ryan Clark (shoulder) will not participate during the team's minicamp because of offseason shoulder surgery;
Pittsburgh Steelers WR Hines Ward (shoulder) will not participate during the team's minicamp because of offseason shoulder surgery;
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said the team will not fine LB Larry Foote for not reporting for minicamp because everyone involved thought he should not report.

Be a nice bonus if Sweed works out though.

I'm kind of excited to see Stefan Logan from the CFL:

It what seems to be a daily occurrence at Steelers camp, the funny play for Saturday involved nose tackle Chris Hoke. At 6 feet, 2 inches tall, weighing 302 pounds, Hoke was caught covering speedy, 5-feet-7 scat back Stephan Logan in the flat. The quarterback read the play correctly and quickly threw the ball to Logan, who put a juke move on Hoke that nearly caused him to completely flip over himself. The team went nuts and even congratulated Hoke for selling out and trying to make the play, despite the obvious mismatch.

...might be nice to have a Darren Sproles kind of guy who can juke all over the place

I have high hopes for Sweed. He looks like he can get open. I think the drops will go away as he matures and gets setttled in. He can run and get seperation, so he has half the battle. Now if he can master the most important part we might have something.

i agree

that drop was just a result of limited playing time then all of the sudden being wide open in the nfc championship game

I agree...It seemed as if Sweed was open all game...I don't know what the Eagles and Cardinals were thinking in not assigning a man to Sweed.
