Could you 'suck it in' for just one season?

Postby bigjoespompano » Wed Apr 29, 2009 6:40 am

Being a Stillers fan, I know it's hard to imagine going from a SB into the tank (we've done it before) but could you (would you?) be willing to let this next season go KNOWING we will draft high next April? Would you be willing to endure the pain knowing that we would draft a 'Road Grader" that would anchor one of our lines for the next ten years? Understand, I'm NOT advocating losing on purpose or anything of the sort. All I'm saying is that if the season, for what ever reason, doesn't go as expected, will you hold your anger/frustration knowing the possibilities next draft day?

hell no. there is no certainty to the draft, hall of famers have been drafted late and guys who never did a damn thing were drafted early. and if you forgot the latest and greatest offensive lineman we drafted around here was i think around 27 or 28 in the first round. drafting a guy first overall doesn't mean a thing. besides, i'd rather win another trophy. we were able to do it with a terrible line last year, why not again? and to paraphrase coach tomlin...he walks by SIX lombardi's not any offensive lineman of the year awards.

it's kind of a moot situation. if things don't go as well as we hope... what else are we supposed to do? of course we'll look at the silver lining.

who says we'd draft o-line with a top 10 pick anyway? seems the front office is unable to admit there is a need.

Hell no I don't want a top 10 pick for several reasons:

1. Top 10 picks command way to much money for the risk of a bust. I would like to have pick 32 every year but that won't happen. Let's see draft picks when we have been a little lower on the board in the first round. Heat Miller, Tonio, Mendenhall. Not bad at all.

2. Look at the past few years. Not many teams have turned it around with one top pick. Yeah Miami went from 1-15 to a playoff spot. however, it was not all Jake Long.

I think the steelers have proven time and time again that high round draft picks are not needed for the long term success of a franchise. I think the next 4 years are going to be golden. We have good youth coming in, veteran leadership at skill positions, and a coach who only cares about winning SBs. I don't think we will have to 'suck it up' any time soon.

I read a stat this week that Smith, the Bengals 1st rounder, is expected to sign a contract worth $50 mil over 5 years. Hood, the Steelers first rounder is expected to sign a contract worth $7.5 mil over 5 years.

There is no way in hell I'd want our cap space tied up with a contract 1 player like that.

Even though the Steelers have drafted well in the late first, I think it has hurt us in terms of available players. There haven't been "first round" talent on the o-line late in either of the past few years. Rather than reaching, the steelers grabbed the BPA. But the o-line is shitty now as a result.

I hope the Bungles pay $50m to a larda$$ who needed a bra to run on his pro day. Smith could turn out being like Jamain Stephens, that lineman the Stillers took about 12 yrs ago who couldn't even finish the warmup sprints at camp.
