Re: Stillers.com Draft Day Thread
So we move down 15 spots and add an extra pick 20 spots from now. I like it. Not sure who's still available at CB but lots of quality OL (guard & center) prospects out there.
Maybe Gilbert is still there at 3.15

32. PITTSBURGH STEELERS: Evander Hood, DT, Missouri
Pro analysis: The world champion Steelers wrap up the first round by grabbing Hood. Given the aging front line in Pittsburgh, Hood brings needed depth, though he's not the space eater that NT Casey Hampton is. Hood could see time alongside Hampton as a DE ... or his arrival could mean the Steelers will eventually transition to the Tampa 2 look that head coach Mike Tomlin learned in Tampa and utilized as Minnesota's defensive coordinator in 2006. Still, this pick was likely made with defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau's blessing and Hood should see the field plenty in 2009.
College analysis: Being the best player on Missouri's defensive line had its drawbacks for Hood. He was constantly double-teamed by offensive lines, but that didn't stop him from making an impact. He still managed 62 tackles and five sacks in his senior season, when he was a first-team All-Big 12 pick. Sounds like the perfect player for the hard-nosed Steelers.

Re: Stillers.com Draft Day Thread
today the real key is the three 3rd rnd picks.
After the anthony smith, willie reid picks of a few years back plus the questionable pick of Hills last year. We need to make hay with these picks. As with an steeler draft you have to wait a couple of years to see.
I do like the way Tomlin and Colbert have approached things thus far.
The trade down in the 3rd round was a good thing.

Re: Stillers.com Draft Day Thread
i haven't heard anything about him. what's his story?
Re: Stillers.com Draft Day Thread
This year is strictly draft by position (to our need) - now did we get the best available at the positions? Time will tell. They followed the script to the Tee. Which means we will see AQ Shipley as our next pick

I believe they had him in, so it's possible if he's there.

Re: Stillers.com Draft Day Thread
Positives: Versatile player who could handle strong-side guard or tackle duties. Tall and strong with a solid punch. Very difficult to bull rush, as he uses his hands and anchors very well. Moves feet fairly well in pass protection, walling off tackles to create holes inside and getting to linebackers at the second level. Traps and pulls inside, usually finding a target to negate. Combos well, pushing with one arm on the tackle and reaching the linebacker. Willing to head downfield on pass plays to get to safeties and corners. Comes out of his stance with power and gets his hands up on his man's jersey quickly. Picks up twists and blitzes well.
Negatives: Plays a bit tall at times, and can get off balance. Loses the leverage battle at times as his pads aren't low enough in short-yardage situations. Best at trapping or pulling just outside the right tackle. Doesn't dominate smaller players in space as much as you'd think at his size. Tends to lean into his man a bit too much at the line, getting off balance and only adequately recovering.
Pick Analysis: The former Badger is a tough, blue-collar player with the ability to create a push along the line. Though he has limited athleticism, he gives the team a quality young player with the potential to develop into a versatile starter.
...I'm sorry, what is it that you dislike about this pick? And someone mentioned hating his video. It's a good thing you aren't in charge of the Steeler's draft...I'd hate to have someone draft players based on a highlight reel.

Re: Stillers.com Draft Day Thread
Anyone drafted after the fist 2 rounds is going to have some "warts". Some can be smoothed over and some can't. That's what makes the later rounds such a crap shoot. You better not miss very often in rounds 1 or 2, but 3-7 is about can you polish the stone into a diamond.

Right. But you got to get the right kind of stones. Once afuckinggain the Steelers go weird in the late rounds. I mean What in fuck is with 2 CBs and a RB? We just let Gary Russel go so what do they do? There were some big OL guys available for Chrissakes. Man the Steelers just seem to mail it in on the second day every fucking year
Where is Omar now? See what I mean?

Re: Stillers.com Draft Day Thread
I think Summers could have been an UFA for us if we liked him. I see the short yardage interset after Russell was let go for cap space, but why reach when we have such big holes in the OL? Hell take a risk on OL. I get the CB I think. We don't have anybody beyond Taylor and Gay that figure beyond the next year or so.

Even more surprising than the Steelers God-awful draft, the Bengals are probably having the best draft of any team.

Re: Stillers.com Draft Day Thread
I don't think our draft is awful. I still have huge concerns about the OL, but they obviously didn't like what has been available at the particular point in the draft. We've addressed needs on the DL, CB and in the return game. Picking as late as the SB champion does is hard to get immediate impact. This story won't be told for a few years. I don't worry about the Bengals until the parole officers chime in.
