Tweener sounds like the description for half of the positions on an effective 3-4 defense to me. ;) A tweener tackle should be able to play end in the 3-4. We have the rep for finding the right fit for our style D. Tweener ends play OLB. Nobody identifies those types better than us.

Buffalo's draft looks like what our ideal draft would look like. Maybin DE, Wood C, Byrd CB.

No doubt. :surockin: Maybe we can get Unger, who I liked at 1.32.

I'm very happy with the pick. The only way the OLB's function properly is with stout DE's causing problems for the other team's offensive line. This kid has very, very little downside. He's an extremely coachable, hard working kid, who'll probably be on the line for the next decade.

You could argue that the Steelers needed a CB or OG/C with this pick, but I'm not certain that either is the case. Each position has enough depth that they could find somebody later on. The same can't be said for 3-4 DE. Past Ziggy, there might've been some people to fit into the system, but with so many more 3-4 defences coming along I doubt they would've gotten what they were looking for.

I'm sure he can play. I trust our front office, I'm just scared to death to go into the season with our current starters at CB & OL.

Really?
Cause our current starters draft positions would indcate you can find 3-4 DE's later in the draft

Aaron Smith DE Northern Colorado drafted in the 4th round, 109 overall
and
Brett Keisel DE Brigham Young drafted 7th round, 242 overall

Browns latest pick gets bashed.
http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/draft/draft?season=2009&round=2

The final veteran triplet of Georgia's offense, as Massaquoi follows both Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno off the board. The Browns got Brian Robiskie earlier at wideout, and Massaquoi is similiar because he is big and has good hands but struggles with gaining separation. This definitely was a head-scratching reach.

Smith was drafted in 1999, and Kiesel in 2002. The only way that our current starters could suggest that it'd be possible for us to find that kind of quality DE this year would be if these drafts were similar, and they aren't. For one, this isn't 10 or 7 year's ago, and there are plenty more 3-4 teams now than there used to be looking to find this kind of player. For two, back then the need for a DE wasn't as great as it is now - and no one could have predicted that Kiesel taken in the 7th round in 2002 would have been the type of player he is now.

Certainly I understand the sentiment about our current situation at CB and OG/C. But don't forget that had the Steelers selected a CB or OG/C, there's no way that they would've started a rookie who doesn't know the system. The importance, of course, is depth, and you can find depth in the 2nd or 3rd round.

I disagree.
Faneca & Simmons were drafted as a guards and started games their rookie years.
Same with rookie CB's we've dratfed - Woodson, Scott, and Figures.

You arguement about the number of teams runnign 3-4 verse 4-3 defenses doesn't hold water either cause these players CAN play in both.

i have no idea what the teams left ahead of us in the 2nd need, but i have to think we take either robinson or beatty in the second if either are there (take beatty and move colon inside).

I like that:
Beatty being plan A (I am sitting here with fingers crossed that he'll fall to us.)

Going into the draft we had 3 big needs...OL, DL, CB. I think this comes down to BPA. They thought the remaining OL and CBs were reaches or they really liked Ziggy.

I didn't like the pick at first, but it is a typical Steelers pick. Did Mendenhall make much sense? Not really. Pretty much everyone here dislike Timmons. Let's see how this plays out. Ziggy has a motor and is 6'2 300 lbs. He can be a rotational player at all 3 spots right out of the gate. That is a quality pick in my book. Instant depth at an aging position.

They thought the remaining OL and CBs were reaches AND they really liked Ziggy. Very solid pick. Ziggy was a mid first round talent.

Getting very close and Gilbert is still available. I really wanted to see 2 DL in our top 3 picks. Gilbert, Ziggy, Timmons, Woody, Harrison..... wow what a force it could be.......
