In case you missed it the First selection in this year's draft has essentially already been made:

University of Georgia QB Matthew Stafford will be the Detroit Lions' No. 1 overall draft pick after agreeing Friday night to a six-year deal that will pay the rookie $41.7 million in guarantees and could be worth as much as $78 million.

Kevin Seifert, of ESPN.com, reports the Detroit Lions gave QB Matthew Stafford almost a 30 percent raise over last year's top overall NFL Draft pick, Miami Dolphins OT Jake Long. Stafford's $41.7 million in guarantees was 17 percent more than the Atlanta Falcons gave QB Matt Ryan last year as the No. 3 overall pick.

The money the Rookies recieve is way too much. This new head of the Union sounds like he likes it the way it is.

If Stafford sucks the Lions just fell back another 5 years. Im so happy the Stillers compete every year and dont have to pay top pick money.

there's a salary cap in football (unlike baseball, basketball, etc.); put me in the camp that would like to see a rookie salary cap as well.

Are the Steelers one of those teams making offers?

Off topic, but basketball has a salary cap. It is different from the NFL in that you can go over it to sign players already on your roster. This, however, means you can only sign free agents for vet minimum and will screw you over if you don't play it safe (Knickerbockers).

Rookies receive far too much money, though. Stafford just got a deal comparable to Roethlisberger and he hasn't taken a snap yet.

Hammer,

How do you rate the pick? He is a good motor guy, but DL over OL? What are your thoughts?
