Do or Die Year?????

Postby PSUPERCY » Tue Apr 21, 2009 11:52 am

Quoting:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d ... nfirm=true

"Intentionally or not, management is allowing a number of players -- among them Ward, Hampton, Foote, Miller, Parker, Keisel, safety Ryan Clark and kicker Jeff Reed -- to go into the final season of their contracts. Only All-Pro linebacker James Harrison, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and left guard Chris Kemoeatu have signed new contracts."

This year we are probably OK. I know it is the nature of the business, but I am not anxious for a return to the Bubby Brister days. Does anyone see a way that they can keep this team together after next year? If Holmes has another year like the one he had, keeping him will probably break the bank. :?:

I would not be as concerned as you are about the quality of the team declining. It will look DIFFERENT, but depending on the development of some young players, most of the veterans you listed will be "spent" and on the decline by next year...

Ward- on decline, but too important to let go....I would imagine he gets signed because his market value will not be too high due to age
Hampton- has already declined significantly....how effective can he be as a regular player anymore?...at worst, Hoke starts, which might be better anyways by then
Foote- was never that good anyways....can be easily replaced, we have Timmons
Miller- difficult to replace, should be priority to resign
Parker- on decline, brittle, and we have Mendenhall
Keisel- can be resigned but should be backup by then anyways
Ryan Clark- on decline, replacable
Jeff Reed-can be resigned probably, if not, not end of world

So in conclusion, we should still be competitive, but with some new players and keep the key ones......

I know it's fun to speculate on drafts, trades, contracts, etc. but at this point (2 SB's in 4 years) I think we gotta give the benefit of the doubt to the front office, that they know what they are doing.

My speculation is that maybe they feel getting "contract years" out of these guys is worth the risk that they might play so well that they get outbid after next year. Okay, maybe Heath Miller has an incredible year, and we lose him for the '10 season to some other team that overpays - at least we got that "incredible year" out of him, maybe helping us to another SB. Maybe the front office feels like they locked up too many guys in the past who didn't play up to the level at which they were paid. It's all about cap management now, having a team that's deep enough to survive what can be a 20-game season if you're going to win it all. Over-paying for a star that doesn't perform is a killer to cap management.

Overall, I look at who we got that's a solid and experienced and not all that old, the young guys we got developing, hopefully a solid draft, and I am feeling that we are in pretty damm good shape. It hasn't been this much fun following the Stillers for almost 30 years.

personally, i'm tired of the whole "they always re-sign players with 1 year left on their contract" so there's automatic speculation if they don't. it seems like they just don't have the money right now to re-sign them all this year.

front office is smart enough to know who to keep and who to drop.

The Only guys I'm worried about re-signing over the next couple of years will be:
Holmes
Timmons
Woodley

All others are about average to good players, but replacable thru the draft.

Of the guys from that list, Ward or maybe Miller appear to be the most valuable. None of them are guys that the Steelers would like to lose, but some are easier to find replacements for than others. Wards play will eventually decline, but his legacy and presence from the wide receiver position is something that can only be filled by someone with 10 seasons of blue collar effort.

Miller is an acceptable dual threat at tight end, and has won two Super Bowls. His elite success is obvious(great run in the playoffs as a rookie), and could potentially get better if he is extended in Pittsburgh for the right price.

Miller will definitely be extended before the start of the season. After the draft and throughout training camp they will access their personnel and decide who needs to be resigned before the start of the next regular season and who doesn't. Usually when players have 1 year remaining on their contracts they don't get resigned until summer unless they are a staple player like Polamalu, Roethlisberger, or Harrison.

Just came to my mind, but isn't there no cap next year? Meaning we may be able to sign as many of these guys as we want?

I think you guys overlook Ryan Clark. Hes an enforcer out there. He probably can be had for cheap. Hes more important to the D than you guys think. Hes the reason Troy can run around and do his thing.
