Russell released
Gary Russell was released by dem Stillers; does this change draft strategy?
IMHO, emphasis should be placed on OL, DL, DB, WR.

Re: Russell released
That is a good thing. We wont have to watch that tugboat try and return kicks this year. IMHO I feel your draft startegy is accurate, but I feel like Sweed, Nance or both will pan out at WR.

Rashard is healthy now and dont underestimate the Logan kid out of the CFL he's going to be fun to watch. Moore also had a great year. I dont agree with everyone about the o-line. CB is easily out most pressing need.

Re: Russell released
Wow. I'm kind of surprised. I thought Carey Davis would be cut before Russell. He wasn't super flashy on kick returns, but he was pretty good at running in a straight line and getting us decent field pos, and most of all, not fumbling. Hope Rashard is ready.
Re: Russell released
Russell was cool and I think had promise. Stillers know what their doing. Stillers will take the BPA when there turn comes. Lots of good DE available in the later rounds which is where they got some of our current ones... Kiesel was a 7 th round pick. Who knows who is going to drop into our lap with the first pick...

kind of a strange move, just because why do it now?
Russell was cheap, so it isn't a cap move.
Maybe we need the roster spot for a free agent

The Steelers gave no reason for his release.

In an interesting move Thursday, the Steelers released running back Gary Russell, their primary kickoff return man and short-yardage specialist in 2008.
The move was announced at the same time as the team announced it had re-signed quarterback Charlie Batch.
It's likely that this was a salary cap move. With the signings of James Harrison and Batch this week, the Steelers had to be tight against the cap.
Russell wasn't making a lot of money, but the $450,000 or so in base salary he would have earned was likely used to sign Batch.
It also shows how much confidence the Steelers have that running back Rashard Mendenhall will be completely healed from the broken shoulder he suffered early in the 2008 season.

This guy was kicked out of UMinn due to academic probs. Sounds to me he wasn't a model citizen here either.

Re: Russell released
Russell had his probelms at Uni, but he put that behind him and worked hard to win a roster spot, he then, when called upon did some sterling short yardage and 3rd down conversion work down the stretch and even scored a Goal line TD in the SB, NOT SURE WHO ELSE WE COULD HAVE TRUSTED WITH THAT RESPONSIBILTY!! He also stepped in for returns, basically cus he could be trusted, and he even gave us some decent yardage doing that.
Quite frankly, I'm surprised, it would have been nice to see him develop some more.
There is nothing at all to suggest that Russell had fell back into old habits, so give the guy a break!
I wish Gary all the best for the future, even though that may be with the Bengals!!

Wow, you guys are slow over here.
It's because the Steelers are aggressively pursuing Roscoe Parish.
Parish is a proven WR, (good replacement for Nate) and most importantly is one of the BEST return men in the game. Russel was released because Parish is taking his spot.
The Bills want a draft pick, and this trade will most likely go down on draft day.

Yeah, real slow. (Your article linking these rumors to the Steelers is dated TODAY)
The Bills have been shopping him for a week.
http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/04/09/receiver-rich-bills-trying-to-trade-parrish/
and the "rumors" have been to many teams.
pretty sure The Kid got stopped for DUI in 2008.
typical Titans fan.
buying into every pre-draft rumor.

Re: Russell released
That cannot be the REAL reason.....
I am disappointed, but I am sure there is a real reason. I liked Russell. He had guts and was the only back that could get a yard with our poor blocking. He should not have been on the KO return......that was bad coaching decision, not his fault.....
